Metz has been selected to at- tend the three-year program at Montreal's prestigious National Theatre School of Canada, joining Patrick Gallagher as the second Douglas College student to be ac- cepted in the last two years. Only 14 students of 500 who auditioned nationally were accepted by the school, commonly regarded as the best in the country. Metz, who played the role of Sky Masterson in last fall’s Guys and Dolls, and Kadmos in this spring’s production of The Bacchae, said the two years he spent in the College’s Theatre program sparked his determination to strive for a career in theatre. “T would recommend the pro- gram for the simple fact that it real- ly lets you know if you want to work in theatre. It’s a great start- ing ground,” he said. “It makes me feel really good about the program,” said Theatre Instructor Dorothy Jones. “They only take 14 people from across be facilitating. Both students always did a little extra to make a show work. “They are both workers, and that’s what you need. Talent is only a part of it,” offered Jones. “You have to be willing to be part of the entire production process, not just acting. Derek is the type who will build sets and I’ve seen him get impatient with other people who weren't willing to work because he knows it will af- fect the show.” @ Gite
