| A two-evening session taught by a master-teacher of translation, PETER
NEWMARK, of the Polytechnic of Central London, England. Mr. Newmark is
the author of numerous publications on translation, among which is the
well-known text Approaches te Translation (4th edition). He nas lectured
in 25 countries, and is coming from England to be a keynote speaker at
the International Conference of Translators and Interpreters, May 22-24,
1987. Mr. Newmark presents practical, down-to-earth strategies to deal
with common problems encountered by translators. This is a unique
opportunity for Vancouver translators, educators and students of translation

to benefit from a dynamic and captivating teacher.

May 19 - The Process of Translating
(a) The Approach: analytical or immediate.
(b) Translating: the levels of text, reality, cohesiveness and
natural usage.

(c) Revision and appraisal. What do we look for?

May 20 - Some Specific Problems of Translation

 

Translating: titles; cultural words; metaphors; institutional

terms; proper names; neologisms; acronyms; sentence-connect ives; 4

familiar alternatives.
