October 22, 2003 Flash’s Take Flash Gordon Sports Editor Rugby World Cup 2003, Oct 10-Nov 22 Well, for all the rugger fans out there, this is a time of joy, excitement and malarkey. Canadian rugby supporters have little to cheer about other than the team qualified for the tournament. They sit in a pool with the All-Blacks of New Zealand, Wales, and Italy. Sadly Canada is considered the weakest link and will likely be the first to be voted off the island. A favourite to win the tournament is England. Arguably the English have the best team in the world at the moment. Since my militant Braveheart watching, English hating days have passed, I can’t think of any reason they shouldn't win. World Series 2003 Of all four teams remaining, it would be a true Cinderella story if the Chicago Cubs met the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. Both clubs have shared a history of heart break since the early 1900s. While major league baseball is as boring as watching the grass grow, it would make a good headline for one of those teams to win. If I had my way, I would root for the Red Sox. I have always liked Boston as a city and I have a distaste for the Yankees. Honestly, I can not back the Cubs because I’m sick of seeing Sammy Sosa’s hand gestures. What does it mean?? Canadian Football League It remains by far a more entertaining version of American football. A faster, more wide open game played in the cold North. Like any Canadian prod- uct, the CFL has struggled with atten- dance and the management of its fran- chises. Toronto has even had a hard time supporting the Argonauts. The CEL brand of football just isn’t suited to filling cavernous stadiums like the Toronto Skydome. Ottawa, on the other hand, has achieved some success with the rebirth of its franchise, Ottawa Renegades. In their first season, the Renegades have made the play-offs which bodes well for the future. However, like any CFL season, the team could be belly up next year. The Hamilton Ti-Cats were the seed of futility on and off the field this season. They won only a handful of games and Sports were managed by the league. Recently, ° millionaire Bob Young purchased the team. By next year maybe there will be a little more stability in the league. National Football League I can't wait to see those Super Bowl commercials this year because that is really what the season is all about. National Basketball Association The most obvious thing for me to men- tion is the charges against Kobe Bryant. Honestly, I don’t want to touch the issue with a ten-foot pole. National Hockey League Colorado has the sickest lineup in the NHL at the moment. With Joe Sakic, Petr Forsberg, Milan Hedjuk, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne, Rob Blake, and Adam Foote on the roster—How can they not win? The void in goal might have something to do with it...or it might have something to do with hav- ing too many stars. The Ottawa Senators, on the other hand, may be the team to beat. Ottawa boasts a complete lineup of superstar talent and compli- e the other press © mentary veteran and young players. With Patrick Lalime in net, they are a very solid team. As an Ottawa fan, I say “Toronto sucks.” The Vancouver Canucks have a lot of poten- tial as always but cynics will wait for the ‘Nucks to shoot themselves in the foot like last year. must Women’s World Cup of Soccer Germany won the illustrious soccer title beating Team Sweden 2-1. I would have watched it but Flash can only watch so much soccer in a season. Canada put on a strong performance in the tourna- ment going in ranked twelfth. They shocked arch-rival China with a 1-0 victory taking the Canadians to their first even World Cup semi-final game against Sweden. A performance like that for the Canadians really boosts support for a program. It shows that all the hard work and development of younger players is paying off. Hopefully next World Cup will see an even better team. Classifieds Students advertise for free!
