April 27 to May 4 2005 Theatre Program Auditions For more information, call 604-527-5279 Douglas College students, athletes capture major awards at BC Wheelchair Sports Association Recognition Night Douglas College students and athletes scored big at the BC Wheelchair Sports Annual Awards Evening and Paralympic Celebration, held March 5, which honoured nominees and recipients of the 2004 BCWSA Annual Awards as well as the athletes and support staff who represented BC and Canada at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games. “Douglas College athletes and staff have won awards in the past, but this was a banner year,” said Sports Science instructor and Wheelchair Basketball Coach Tim Frick. Student Yasaman Mahboubi of Coquitlam won the Mairin Johnston Memorial Award, given to athletes under 25 years old who demonstrate enthusiasm, commit- “ ment, spirit and sports- manship. Mahboubi joined BC Wheelchair Sport in 2004. Her coaches say she is positive, enthusiastic, a joy to train with and has the drive and determination to excel in her sport. Sunera Samarakoon, a Burnaby Douglas College student, was named the Peter Devoe Memorial Junior Athlete of the Year. The award is given to an athlete under 19 years of age competing on a team or in an individual wheelchair sport in BC who demonstrates commitment and enthusiasm in their sport. Samarakoon was recog- nized as a “junior athlete who took his game to a new level. His personal improvement as a player is unmatched with any other junior player in the 005 Unsung Heroine mAward Winners program at the present moment.” In 2004, Samarakoon traveled with the BC wheelchair basketball team to the junior nationals and is now part of the junior national team training pool of athletes. Frick was among those who received Paralympic Recognition awards given to Athletics members. Community members of CSRW wheelchair basketball teams who train at Douglas College were also recognized: Trish Nicholoson, coach; Carrie Linegar, manager; Marni Abbott, athlete; Jennifer Krempien, athlete; Erik Hagreen, equipment manager; Richard Peter, athlete; Jaimie Borisoff, athlete; Arley McNeney, athlete; and Shira Golden, athlete. Career counsellors Yellow Brick Road A full house was off to see Dr. Norman Amundson, the wonderful wizard of career counselling, ata workshop held by the Douglas College Training Group in March. Held at the Career Builder Plus office in Maple Ridge, Metaphors: Walking the Yellow Brick Road, focused on career metaphors -- particularly around career transition issues -- and the “journey” metaphor as a “walk down the yellow brick road” from The Wizard of Oz. Amundson presented a case study and accompanying video illustrating the career counselling process. ‘Training Group Program Manager Julian Gardiner said came away with some concrete strategies for using metaphors in £ career counselling. £ “After the workshop many commented what a great teacher Norm is and that they can see immedi- ately how to apply what they learned from him to their work with the unemployed,” said Gardiner. Amundson is a well respected and loved consultant and trainer in the career development sector. He’s authored numerous articles and books, including Active Engagement: Enhancing the Career Counselling Process, which won the 2000 Best Book Award by the Canadian Counseling Association. His latest book is Essential Elements of Career Counselling. Last year, Amundson spoke in seven different countries with four additional trips across Canada. He’s an hon- orary director of NETWERCC.
