The simple pleasures » Garth McLennan Editor in Chief T=: is a job that has come with a combination of struggles and successes. It’s a position that I coveted for several years before landing it, and it’s one I’Il most certainly miss now that it’s gone. Looking back and reflecting is often a useful process, and I think, with this being my last lettitor, it’s something that feels appropriate and fitting for this space. I won’t delve into the details of my departure, but instead, II] talk about what made this job so much fun. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it’s the little things that make a position like this so fulfilling, as clichéd as that sounds. The best part, as an editor, has been seeing the development of the writers of this paper the longer they’ ve been here. Take Josh Martin, for example, the current sports editor who took his job with us right out of high school and has evolved into a truly tremendous columnist with terrific insight. Or take Stephanie Trembath, our near flawless life and style editor who has done an incredible amount for The Other Press and cares about it, and those who read it, more than just about anyone I know. She joined us as a contributor and through her we’ve seen the creation of the fashion section, which has been one of the best in this paper since day one. I can’t think of a better example than her of what student journalism is all about: bright ideas, boundless enthusiasm and unbridled passion for the job. Another great aspect of being the steward of this institution, which I might not have had a full appreciation for before taking charge, is witnessing the remarkable work ethic and skill of our production team, Tim Arndt and Brian Yoo, two guys who don’t get nearly enough credit. Without them though, you wouldn’t be reading this newspaper. Tim is one of the best people I know while Brian is the glue that holds this place together. Pll miss you guys. A truly cool moment was also seeing that at times, student journalism can be circular. You’!l notice in this issue that our previous editor, Liam Britton, has rejoined The Other Press, and with him back in the ranks there’s no question that this is a better place. When I talk about the simple pleasures of this job, seeing a former colleague, a friend, who I used to work, and more importantly laugh, with was a true treat. I suppose it’s the friendships which have made this job so much fun. Chloe, Josh and Stephanie, I’ll miss you most of all. The last simple pleasure I took from this job was also the best. The most satisfying part of the job for me was in just seeing one of you picking up and reading our paper. This may very well be the final time I get to address you, the reader, in this forum, so if it is, thank you for taking the time to share part of your day with me. It truly was an honour.
