The Light Warehouse Training Program, offered through Adult Special Education at the David Lam Campus in Coquitlam, also provides a much needed re-training option for people who might otherwise fall through the cracks. “There are lots of people who need employment training or re- training who can‘ get funding, such as fishermen and others who have owned their own businesses,” says Adult Special Education Coordinator Bob Logelin. Meanwhile, Logelin is seeking new ways of funding the program beyond its next intake in February. “To date, funding has been committed to run one more session of the program, so at this point we're looking at alternate means of funding,” says Logelin. “My hope is that with the current government emphasis on employment and employment training, they may redirect some funding towards this type of program because of high student demand, high employment outcomes and the fact that it enables some students to get off income assistance and into jobs.” This 16-week program teaches the skills necessary to find entry- level positions in the warehouse field. Students have the opportunity to receive certificates in forklift operation, occupational first aid, WHMIS and occupational health and safety. Using a combination of classroom and on-site training, the program covers all aspects of warehouse work including shipping and receiving, inventory control and order picking. “This is an inexpensive way to get re-training for a job market with a high demand for employees,” says Logelin. “Our entire program costs $660, while comparable courses in the Lower Mainland can cost up to $350 for just one certificate.” “Warehouse workers are always wanted,” says program instructor Chris Gibson. “Nearly all warehouse positions specify the need for the kind of training that students get in our course — it’s a very good job market.” Like many of the adult education programs at Douglas College, the light warehouse program assists people with barriers to employment, a term that includes everyone from those with learning disabilities to those who have simply been out of the job market for a while. “We give our students basic warehousing skills plus employability skills like resume preparation and basic computer knowledge,” says Gibson. “We make sure we give them enough to get and keep a job. And it seems to be working — we've had positive feedback from employers about our grads.” The next session of the Light Warehouse Training Program starts February 4.
