In between, it’s busy, busy, busy so here’s a quick overview of what’s been happening with people around the College. Hayes honored Athletic Director Betty Lou Hayes has been selected as the 1994 Women’s Sport Development Breakthrough Award recipient by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association. The award was initiated in 1993 to celebrate the accomplishments of someone who actively promotes equity and opportunities for women and girls to participate in sport. Betty Lou established a women’s wrestling program in 1991, a women’s rugby squad in 1993 and began work to establish a women’s golf program in 1994, Valecourt elected Bookstore Manager Linda Valecourt was elected President of the Western Canadian College Store Association, which represents staff from more than 70 stores, on October 22 during the association’s conference in Lake Louise. Waack honored Former Music department instructor Henry Waack was honored at the fourth annual Excellence in Arts awards dinner held November 12 in Coquitlam. Henry, who was a founding faculty member of the Music program is retired but often returns to the College to lend piano accompaniment to graduation and awards ceremonies. Murray in the Money Congratulations to Margaret Murray of Administration who won $546 as the October winner of the Foundation’s 60/40 draw. ECE editors Members of the Early Childhood Education department are playing a major role in Canadian Children, a professional journal distributed to members of the Canadian Association for Young Children twice each year. ECE Coordinator Susan Fraser is Consulting Editor while Carol Ebner is Chair of the Publications Committee and Elva Reid serves on the Editorial Review Board. Congrats, Karen Congratulations to Karen Carruthers, who recently became the first person in B.C. to receive accreditation as a Sign Language Instructor. Karen teaches in the Visual Language Interpreter program. Baby banter ESL Instructor Kate Yoshitomi and husband Kerry recently adopted Sarah, a four-month-old girl from Japan...and all the best to Tina Pettie of General Nursing who gave birth to a son, Jordan Carl John Pettie, on October 10. Holiday happening The Social Committee is at it again. The Douglas College Employees Holiday Ball will be held on December 21 in the Douglas Room beginning at 3 pm. Free hot snacks and no-host bar. Jan was an outfielder with the Vancouver Meralomas team which won the Women’s Softball Championship at the World Masters Games (35-year olds and over) in Brisbane, Australia. The Canadians defeated the U.S. 5-3 in the final at the October event.
