The maps illustrate the development of geo- graphical knowledge, imaginary and real, of the North Pacific between 1570 and 1802. The first group of maps portrays the imaginary depiction of the area in the period between 1570 and 1766. The second group of maps, covering the period 1784 to 1795, focuses on the discoveries of Cook and the diffusion of this information. The third and last group of maps details the expansion of the knowledge of the North Pacific after 1785, by focusing on the works of such men as Dixon, Meares and Arrowsmith. The catalogue which accompanies this exhibit not only describes the maps in careful cartobibliographic style, but also discusses their significance to the exploration of the North Pacific.
