INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / SEPTEMBER 5, 1989 © Amabilis Singers Perform in Tokyo Aida Two tenors and two basses from the Amabilis Singers of New Westminster joined their director, Diane Loomer, in Tokyo, Japan recently to sing in the Tokyo performances of Aida. Japan loved the opera spec- tacular, with 36,000 people attending the three sold-out per- formances. Some paid up to $200 Canadian to sit in the bleachers. The singers found the climate hot and humid, but the accom- modations, in one of Tokyo’s finer hotels, more than made up for the heat. This once in a lifetime, choral opportunity was extended by the producers of Aida after two Amabilis tenors sang in the Van- couver production. Having four choir members chosen to sing in Aida is a true compliment to the Amabilis Singers. It demonstrates some of the opportunities available to Amabilis Singers, who are al- ways on the look out for new tenors or basses to join their ranks. The Amabilis Singers are New Westminster's community choir. They were founded by Diane Loomer of Douglas Col- lege seven years ago with seven members. The choir now num- bers over 110. Tenors or basses who would like to sing with this dynamic choir please call Cindy Donatelli at 530-3835 for sign-up informa- tion. Join the Amabilis Singers and find out how much fun it can be to sing for the pure enjoyment of singing. Japan is planning another major operatic work; you could be closer to Japan than you think. @ BE RNR EATER TE A a SP TAIT RTINA SCL A GE Pat on the Back continued trom page 4 Shirley Chan - Always cheerful. A+ sense of humour. Makes my cafeteria visits memorable. And boy, can she “move” a line! Marlene Hancock - Because she teaches her subject well; with fairness of judgement and attention to detail. She makes her classes exciting by placing great emphasis upon class discussion and yiving personal and knowledgeable insight into all facets of politics. The best part of her classes is the inter-play among the students upon topics with a wide range of interest. She has also offered constructive criticism of papers submitted which goes towards helping my marks in other classes to improve.!
