I asked these questions of the Vancouver band, Oversoul Seven, but the answers were far and few between. “It’s just a name,” says drummer Darrell Shibley. “A cool name,” adds another member. The trio has been playing around town since last summer, gaining a name for itself by placing second in CITR radio’s Shindig competition and then, right afterwards, putting out a spunky little twelve-inch re- cord titled “Fool’s Revelation”. “The record is a statement; a reflection of our ambition,” explains guitarist and vocal- ist Adam Gejdos. And ambitious they are. They've already shot a video for one of the songs, and are planning more recordings, and are getting set to sweep Canada with a tour that will take them to Toronto and back by June. They’re an exhilarating bunch of guys to hang around with for a day, their enthusi- asm about the days ahead is really infec- “A Younger Earth” Alex Stella (Deinotation-7 Press) Reviewed by Jeff House If you are looking through the bookstore for a book NOT to read this year, please consider “A Younger Earth”. People who know me know might think that this is a very quickly made decision, this is true as I have only read the first chapter. You might think that this is not much to go on, but it doesn’t take much more when the first chapter includes such verbal monstrosities as: “Through the marred but thick plexi- glass squares, circles, ovals and triangles inlaid throughout the bottom of the dance pit, polychromatous luminance corusca- ted, electronically attuned to the pervas- ive pitch and transunding timbre.” It might be noted that it gets worse. I pride myself on knowing perhaps 2 out of 3 words in the Webster’s dictionary, unfortunately Stella insists on using the other 1. In what other novel will you ever hear a foreman speak to his men thus, “Osmer, you sadden me. You said exactly that two hours and fifteen minutes ago.” His overly verbose manner is only ampli- tious, but there are a few topics that aren’t on their list of favourites. For example, do they think that comparisons to such varied bands as The Clash, Led Zeppelin and Love are fair? “No,” responds bassist Len Morgan. Can you elaborate on that? “No,” comes the answer again. Actually Shibley, Gejdos and Morgan are pretty nice guys, and their music is neat as well. They play guitar based rock that swells both emotionally and dynamically. “We like to mix up the songs structurally quite a bit,” says Gejdos. “We screw up the tempo slot. Not just because we can, but be- cause it makes things a lot more interesting and spontaneous.” Spontaneous and interesting, yes. Their live shows are always interesting and some- times you can hear spontaneity rising in the form of snippets of Black Sabbath, Elvis Costello or The Who inbetween songs. Their last live show was also their first all- ages show, on March 28 when _ they appeared with The Grapes of Wrath and A Day in Paris. Alex Stella takes. In the first chapter a person sits ina restaurant, is then in a dance club, a fire breaks out, and someone kills their lover. Not bad for 12 pages. All in all this books seems to me a novel written by a person who just recieved his PhD in English from a Cracker Jack box and wishes to impress his friends. In this case, they probably weren’t. Maybe when I’ve got a few months to kill I'll finish the book, but probably not. fied by the horrible plot twists the book “Re testurant + Lounge 606 - 12th street new westminster, b.c. - Lounge only - Please show proper Student I.D. - Offer not valid with any other promotion - Good from 2 pm - 10 pm Stella’s “Earth” a flop , Photo by: NGT NRE RUNGHIES UICEMSED PREKNGES § GOOD ThE EATING EROUUAENY &j 1 from Douglas College Sth st.
