TO DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD | December {16, T9382. . DOUGLAS COLLEGE erin ARCHIVES Concerns have been voiced by the B.C.G.E.U. executive regarding the stressful conditions under which many members are currently operating. An excellent report was tabled by Ms. Exmann at the last meeting of the Management Committee, and a number of specific actions have been agreed to, on a timetabled basis, that we hope will reduce the level of concern. | Negotiations have begun today with the B.C.G.E.U. on their next contract, and we expect that negotiations will be commencing with the Faculty Association within the next two months. We have been keeping the three unions apprised of our budget situation, as it has evolved this year. This includes our latest letter of information to the Ministry indicating the situation for this fiscal year and our expectations for next fiscal year as a result of the agreement reached with the Faculty Association last month. Internal Matters - Genera] The "Great Trek" from the McBride Site to the Royal Avenue Site on December 8th was a complete success. This was owing to the enthusiastic leadership and participation of the Student Society, the cheerful co-operation of faculty and staff, and the bemused forebearance of the New Westminster City Police. The presence of Ms. Helen Casher, Mr. Art Sweet, and Mr. Sandy Tompson was very much appreciated. ‘ al A small but happy gathering was held at the Maple Ridge Centre, on Tueseday, December 14th, to celebrate the completion of basic Education programs by a number of students at that Centre. Work is still continuing smoothly on the completion of the Royal “Avenue building. Relationships with the construction forces on the site continue to be amicable, in spite of the stresses caused by hundreds of people settling into incompleted facilities with many systems still functioning inadequately. High praise must continue to be offered to the staff of the Physical Plant & Site Services Department who must deal with a virtually unending stream of problems. There is no doubt that the facility will be excellent, and will justify all of the time and effort spent in planning it. Mr. Redmond will be reporting separately on progress regarding the official opening of the new building. I am given to understand that Premier Bennett's office has promised involvement in the official opening.
