- Hfe aastyte Eclectic eats: a fusion of foods By Stephanie Trembath, Life and Style Editor “Traditional” is not likely a word you would ever use to describe Vancouver or any one of its inhabitants. Vancouver is known for its mixture of culture and varied cuisine, most of which we whip into our own uniquely blended creation to make it “our own.” No matter what your craving may be, Vancouver can serve up any dish your appetite desires. A few Vancouver favourites include Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna on Davie Street, and Las Margaritas where margaritas are presented in glasses the size of small fish bowls. One of Vancouver’s more popular food choices is Japanese cuisine and the little art we know as sushi. Raw, tempura fried, hot or cold, the sushi trend hit Vancouver and it hit hard. On every corner lining every street in all areas of Greater Vancouver you cannot help but go a few steps without walking past a little sushi restaurant. Varying in prices, décor, and signature rolls, all Japanese restaurants guarantee a pair of chopsticks, cuppa green tea, and a bit of rice mixed with fish in little bite sized bits. Since lululemon, Vancouver has become more health conscious (and who are we kidding, it’s more like health crazed) and sushi fits the package perfectly; cheap, delicious, light, and nutritious. To stand out in this industry is a challenge, but not for The Eatery just off of West Broadway. Known for their original creations and vibrant décor, The Eatery’s motto is served “always funky, always fresh”. Established since 1983, you can hear the offbeat tunes and commotion from down the street; turntables have been setup for live DJ’s to perform every Saturday night and the place is usually packed! With Dad’s Root Beer bottles holding candle sticks, and neon coloured lights illuminating the small restaurant, the edgy and avant-garde atmosphere is furthered by the waitresses who juggle trays of coloured martinis in zebra-striped shirts, gladiator sandals, and baby doll dresses. Andy Warhol paintings, Astroboy cartoons, and anime-pop icons cover every inch of the walls and hang from the ceiling. Underwear, t-shits, and soup can shaped magnets with “Miso Horny” are hung and sold in the restaurant. Before you even see the menu, the atmosphere with its 8 modern mixture of new and old art and style will have you forgetting about the traditional role of sushi. The menu; too big, too innovative, too savoury to describe. The menu is divided into Sushi 101; which is comprised of the traditional rolls everyone has tried, and Funky Creations. The latter is filled with a list of rolls that combine ingredients that you would never think tasted good together, or, could be made into a sushi roll. A few of my favorites are the Electric Banana; which features a piece of deep friend banana placed on top, the Malibu Roll; with salmon over crab and papaya, The Beautiful; a mixture of scallop and avocado topped with smoked salmon, and the Viva Las Vegas; crab, eel, avocado, cream cheese topped with spicy mayo, deep fried tempura style. Andy Warhol, The Erotica, Drunken Monkey, Miss Piggy, Tataki Attack; all savoury sushi rolls that live up to their name. Paired with a signature martini, which are just as unusual and inventive, The Eatery goes above and beyond the traditional ways of the Japanese cuisine. You would never find anything like this in Japan, which is why Vancouver is such a great place to live as it takes something simple and transforms it into an art all its own. Dangerous endeavours When it comes to motorcycles and strippers, is the risk worth the ride? By Stephanie Trembath, Life and Style Editor T= time of year always welcomes skimpier, more colourful pieces of clothing; inviting recklessness and erotic ideas. Girls prancing on the beach in snug bikinis or parading down Granville Street in summer dresses and hot shorts is a much awaited moment of the summer for many guys. Anticipation of the alluring array of young ladies is highlighted by the sounds of summer; water crashing onto the beach, music blaring from car windows, chatter and laughter from restaurant patios, and the distant roar of bikes being unleashed into the streets. Like the youthful ladies, the different types of motorcycles that fill the streets of Vancouver during the warmer months of the year are just as appealing in their bravado of masculinity and means of captivating all the attention on the they provide. The women are glorious; pouty lipped, long- legged dream girls with fake breasts and tousled hair. Madame Cleo’s is a popular massage parlour and escort service located on Richards street whose girls have the ability to screen their clients and ask whatever price they wish per service, and the prostitutes that roam Seymour Street are notoriously known for their stunning good looks that they could almost “resemble models.” Thanks to the balmy weather and clear skies, rates of prostitution increase over the summer months and escorts are encouraged to increase their hourly wages. Much like a night with an escort and not exactly a cheap thrill, but definitely fast and empowering to ride, the magnetism of motorcycles is partially due to the risk factor. With only your arms and thigh muscles for a seat belt, and a helmet and Like the pretty girls who walk the streets of Seymour, or offer themselves for a night full of fun, these majestic machines promise a thrilling experience and a time you'll never forget. But when it comes to these audacious adventures, is the ride really worth the risk? road. Heavily street cruising Harley‘s, or high seated sports bikes whizzing past in a blur of bright colors are a most wanted means of transportation, if you’re up for a bit of devilish pleasure that is. Like the pretty girls who walk the streets of Seymour, or offer themselves for a night full of fun, these majestic machines promise a thrilling experience and a time you'll never forget. But when it comes to these audacious adventures, is the ride really worth the risk? Vancouver has over 12 escort services located in the heart of downtown, some are classily disguised as massage parlours or glorified dating services while others, such as Vancouver’s VIP Angel Escorts Services, are more straightforward in what services jacket as protection in a crash, the acceleration and rush you get when you’ re riding a bike is paramount to any other vehicle on the road. A combination of speed, the sound of the engine, and the mystery of the face beyond the helmet, is what makes motorcycles so devastatingly desirous, not to mention the idea that you’re riding alongside with death with every turn and swerve along the pavement. With the scorching heat summer brings there comes a frivolous attitude and tantalizing atmosphere. If motorcycles and women don’t cause a distraction this summer, maybe cliff jumping or some other outdoor adventure will; it’s personal preference in how far your fun takes you and whether or not the risk is worth the ride.
