TURRET TTT while I’m talking about Toronto, I should mention that the University of Toronto has nixed the plans for a new Varsity Stadium, which was to be home to the Argonauts and one of the sites for the 2007 g World Youth Soccer Championship. Lastly, the VET Peles Nt ay National Lacrosse League may also be locking out their players because they also can’t work out a new CBA. Oh yay. And finally, for those of you that have to know something about the NHL, the tally of players in Europe bumped up to 178, with another small group of players leaving. Leading the way in this group is Daniel Briere. And Dan Cloutier returned to Vancouver after being upset with the lack of organization in the Original Stars Hockey League, his biggest problem being that he was facing upwards of 60 shots a game and, with each team Dixon, the swimmer who picked up eight medals. Canada also sported three quintuple gold medal- lists. That’s right. 15 gold medals among three people. Overall, I gotta say I’m glad to see our par- alympic athletes get it right after our poor showing in the “regular” Olympics. Well, it seems like without hockey the sports world has been bland, but that being said, there have been some notable developments in sports around the world. And in case you’ve been helping your grandmother move for the exact seven days roster sporting only one goalie, he was playing between my submission deadlines (Sept. 23-30), then here’s an update on what you missed in the world of sports. Starting with the CFL, where BC got gypped (my apologies to our gypsy readers) out of anoth- et win against Calgary. Calgary won the game 22-21 on the basis of a last second touchdown where replays showed that the ball never actually _ crossed the goal line. But since Calgary is still in the league basement and BC is still the top team in the West, nobody really cares that much. Calgary also made a huge splash later in the week when they acquired Winnipeg quarterback Khari Jones for Joe Fleming in a blockbuster deal. This may not mean much now, but this trade could have a great impact for Calgary next year. The Paralympics were wrapped up, and Canada finished third in the medal tally with 72. This is down from their previous tally of 96 as they trailed Great Britain (94) and China (140). Leading the way for Canada was Victoria native Stephanie Full Tilt at Douglas Darren Paterson, Sports Editor Well, well, well. The sports are going mad at Douglas now and for those of you who actually wanted to watch our teams play but couldn’t, here’s an update of where they’re at. In women’s rugby, our second division team managed to pull off an upset against a team that was playing in the first division last year. They beat the late-arriving Velox Valhallians 22-20. And in the premier division our girls tasted defeat at the hands of the defending champions from Cap College. The final score was 24~7. In soccer, our men kept kicking ass while kicking the ball into the net at the same time. They picked up two more wins against Cariboo and the Okanagan, with the latter being a 4-0 shutout. The | ObnEPPPESS In soccer, Canada slipped down the world rank- ings to 99, only two spots above their all time low of 101. More importantly, you actually have a chance to go out and try to help them as they are playing here in Vancouver on October 13 against Costa Rica. Also of note in the soccer world is Wayne Rooney, the 18-year-old prodigy, who scored three goals in his debut game for Manchester United. On the “that’s weird” front, Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammed Ali, knocked some chick out in preparation for her October 30 fight against Jacqui Frazier, Joe Frazier’s daughter. For those of you who don’t know, this is neat because the two women’s fathers fought often when they were both competing and they are both regarded as two of the greatest boxers of all time. In the random notes section, it was finally announced for certain that the Montréal Expos would move to Washington, DC, next season. This comes as a terrible disappointment to me since they are not taking the Blue Jays with them. And women didn’t fare so well, however, as they picked up a loss to Cariboo and yet another tie from their match against the Okanagan. And finally, our women’s volleyball squad has also started up recently. Sadly though, they have three games in three nights each weekend. what caught my eye in the world of expect to soon be com- menting on Ichiro Suzuki, also known as the man with the coolest batting sta rently on the brink of breaking an 84-year- old record. But I'll save that for next week so that I can look like I have a lot to talk about. So then. So there you have it. That’s sports. I also nce ever, who is cur- until stumbled out of the gates picking up three losses at the Capilano Fall Classic Tourney. They lost 3—0 in straight sets to Malaspina and Capilano, and took Okanagan to a fifth set before losing the decider 15-10. So for now, that’s how we're doing. If you’re looking for a team to watch it’s gotta be the men’s soccer team right now because when they’re playing you've got a pretty good chance to catch a win. As always, I direct you to the website for the Douglas Centre for Sports, Recreation, and Wellness, . And if any of our ath- letes read my crap, then best of luck to you next game. OCuOber = G/A00n
