A group of babies and their Douglas College moms booked Into the Library staff room on July 23 fora pot luck luncheon. The party was organized to Introduce Learn- Ing Resources staff to the latest boom of little people. They reign in Spain Never count your medals before they are won. That’s the very prudent philosophy of Douglas College Instructor Tim Frick as he prepares to coach the Canadian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team at the Barce- lona Paralympics in September. Canada finished fourth at the 1988 Games in Seoul, before Frick assumed the head coaching post. "I think we have a very good chance to do well based on our improvement over the last few years," offers Frick. "But the level of women’s basketball is improving everywhere. The top teams are so close that on any given day we could finish from first to fourth. I just hope that the Frick is one of two Douglas College coaches in Spain this summer, along with Royals wrestling coach Dave McKay. McKay is working with the Canadian squad at the Summer Olympics which began on July 25. The Barcelona Games are the fourth Olym- pics for McKay, who has attended two as a competitor and a third as a fan. "The really unique thing about the Olym- pics is that it is a multi-sport event, so you are not only meeting athletes from all over the world, but also prominent Cana- dian athletes," McKay said. continued on page 4 Opening set for Thomas Haney Centre The pipes will be calling when the new Douglas College campus at Thomas Haney Centre in Maple Ridge is officially opened on October 22. Ceremonies will begin at 2pm with the traditional Douglas College piper leading the platform party. The ceremony will feature messages from dignitaries such as Minister of Education Anita Hagen, Minister of Advanced Educa- tion Dr. Tom Perry, College President Bill Day, and representatives from School District 42 and other government bodies. Thomas Haney Centre is the first facility in Canada designed to house a college and secondary school under one roof. It begins operating in September.
