4 > PD Day Chair now open Douglas College’s Personal Development Day for staff on May 19 was a success because people came forward to help at the last minute, says chair of the PD Day committee Christine Unterthiner. “Tt’s a big job, and Wendy Davies and I pulled it off with the help of people like Wendy Waidson, Jeff McDonald, Christina Symons, and Triena Marples,” says Unterthiner, who has been involved with the event for the past three years, the past two as chair. “Things wouldn’t have come together without their help.” While the evaluation forms from PD Day indicate that this year’s event was a success, Unterthiner hopes that more volunteers will come forward to organize the day next year. “Evaluation forms are great, but we can’t always fit everything in on one day, and I think people understand that. From the suggestions we get, topics are chosen that aren’t available through the college. It’s definitely easier to plan the day when there are more people involved. Besides, it’s more fun with more people.” Call Wendy Davies or Anne Fenton if you would like to get involved for next year. & The PD Day Committee would like to thank all the prize donors who helped make the day a success. This summer ABE and Financial Services programs are working together to provide bank teller training for people with disabilities. As well, Centre 2000 provides a variety of career assessment and training programs for displaced workers. Given those, and our other community-linked training programs, I believe pooling our knowledge and resources will enable us to be well-positioned to serve the new initiatives.” The College is expecting more details from the Ministry. Materials received to date show a funding breakdown of four “building blocks” for the government’s training objectives: Linking High Schools to the Workplace received $19.9 million; Opening More Doors, and the Right Doors, to College and University received $62.8 million; Retraining Workers Closer to Home received $38.7 million; and Moving from Welfare to the Workforce received $78 million. What kinds of programs might emerge from these packages? “The College could explore a program for young women in grades 10 and 11, the grades when many drop out of sciences and math, and which leads to women being under-represented in engineering and scientific professions,” says Janet Knowles, Manager of Centre 2000. “Such a program could provide students with a mentor from a group such as the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology to provide support. The College has the experience of bringing professionals and students together through our Quantum Leaps events.” In all, Skills Now listed 30 initiative areas, including many which dovetail with existing College programs and expertise. This group features: training for people with disabilities ($11.29 million), First Nations partnerships ($5.3 million) and small business training ($5.9 million). The Skills Now package also challenged educators to more effectively provide service to all British Columbians with its “Removing Barriers to Access” initiative. The measure is aimed at enabling groups such as students with disabilities, single parents and aboriginal students to more easily access post-secondary training.
