Take your bow, and get off the stage! Why current pop culture music is nothing but recycled garbage By Jay Schreiber Di you get the new Metallica album? Have you heard the new single from AC/ DC? Are you going to the Backstreet Boys concert? In all these cases, my answer is precisely this: “NO!” Popular Music nowadays is, in one phrase, simply pathetic, recycled, money-grabbing garbage from over-the- hill musical acts. The trends seem to be similar all across the board in the sense that some performing acts just don’t want to die or accept that they’re obsolete. But let me back up and explain a little more about where I’m coming from. Every music era has its shining stars, like the ‘60s and the Beatles, or the “70s with Zeppelin. Metal and Grunge took off in the late “80s and disco fell somewhere in between. But unlike some good musical acts that stop performing all together and understand that they’ve hit their mark, a handful of bands continue to soldier on for the sake of money, and that egotistical feeling of being convinced that they’ve “still got it.” I’m talking about the Boy bands from yesteryear, the groups that your dad used to see back in the day, and the grunge superstars that still think they’re cool even though they stopped chasing the dragon years ago. These performers are expired for the most part, and after several lineup changes and world tours, there’s really nothing new coming out of the workshop. Don’t get me wrong. Lots of groups can still remain fresh and put in the necessary work needed to earn their paycheque at the end of the day, but sometimes a band just doesn’t know when their final encore has ended and it’s time to get off the bloody stage. Hate me if you will, but for love of god, would someone tell the Rolling Stones to just retire already? A band that has been active for over 46 years is both impressive and gimmicky in my opinion. It seems sadly pathetic to be playing in a group that has a combined age of 257 and only four members. It’s more likely to see them playing at the legion hall rather than BC Place Stadium. That being said, the Rolling Stones made some of the best music of their era (the key being their era) and deserve a lot of respect. Honestly, boys, just go peacefully into the night; everyone’s already wearing your freaking merchandise. The most recent example from this brand of lame sales-rock is this: Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy, the most disgusting show of an over-hyped band gone foul. But first, let’s recap the history of this band. Guns N’ Roses were huge in the late 1980s and early ‘90s starting with the release of their 1987 debut Appetite for Destruction. Appetite is still, to this 12 You coul ad’ camera! Send your best photos in to arts@theotherpress.ca! The two best will win cameras by LOMO dwina Contest closes November 24th! Continued Pg. 13
