Discourse, a journal intended to foster discussion of the educational issues facing the College and the BC post-secondary system, has made the first of what its creators hope will be many appearances. “Most of our discourse, be it verbal or written, deals with our day-to-day challenges,” says editor and Music Instructor Kevin Barrington-Foote. “Discussions of larger educational issues seldom enjoy a proper forum. Discourse is an attempt to provide such a forum.” The journal will be published twice yearly, with the fall issue providing the background for a given topic and the spring issue following up with debate based on the fall issue’s content. This way, its creators hope to promote ongoing, critical discussion. For the first issue, the editors chose the controversial topic of diploma and degree granting programs at the community college. Future issues will deal with such topics as student success, college education policy, and dealing with changing demographics. If the inaugural issue is any indication, the journal will provide readers with an interesting combination of hard information and qualified opinions. The continued on page 11
