Alumni and Development Officer Alana Frymire’s husband Bill made a great impression at a recent international com- petition sponsored by the Corel Draw soft- ware company. Bill walked away with the Best of Show award for a computer graph- ics art piece. Prizes included a one-kilo- gram gold bar and $15,000 worth of computer equipment. As well, Frymire’s art will be featured in a $500,000 adver- tising campaign by Corel Draw. Salsa and samba... Blair Fisher reports the Salsa concert on April 16th netted about $1,500 which was used in recording the Jazz Band’s new CD. Fisher also reports some shifting in the songs to be used could mean the disc’s planned title of Snow Samba (Salsa) may be changed... Poetry merits silver medal... Elizabeth Harvor, an Event author, won a silver medal for poetry May 8 at the National Magazine Awards in Toronto. Harvor's poems, "The Street Where We Lived," "Madam Abundance" and "Living With Poets" were first published in Event 20/1. Journey prize finalists... Two stories which appeared in Event have been chosen as finalists for the pres- tigious $10,000 Journey Prize offered by publisher McClelland & Stewart. The winner will be announced in Toronto in October. "No Miracles Sweet Jesus" by Vancouver writer Maria Billion and "A Theory of Discontinuous Existence" by Quebec writer Michael Mirolla will be included in the 1992 edition of The Journey Prize Anthology, to be published in June.
