Ss. Moris, Let the Royals Begin By Josh Martin, Sports Editor College sports teams get set to kick off yet another season. Both the Women and Men Soccer teams started the year off strong winning their first two games, back-to-back against the UNBC Timberwolves. The Women’s Soccer team defeated the UNBC Timberwolves in a 4-1 tilt at the Coquitlam Town Center in the season opener and then again in Prince George on September 19" in a 4-2 Royals win. During the season opener, rookie forward Chantel Rasmussen, all the way from Pitt Meadows, made a great first impression scoring two beauties while Michelle Dispirito and Stephanie Russo potted the other two to seal the deal. The Royals are looking to have a comeback year after unfortunately missing the playoffs last season. The Women’s team is rank..d second in Group A, with six points, only to be behind the Okanagan Heat who have 10 points but have played two more games than the Royals. The Royals Men Soccer Team finished strong last year, coming first at the BCCAA Provincial Championships and third at the CCAA National Championships. They’re looking to repeat and possibly improve on their year which is looking promising so far with back-to-back wins over the UNBC Timberwolves in their first two games of the season which had the scores of 3-1 in the opener, and a 6-1 blowout in the second match. In the first game, the Royals were down a goal; however that didn’t stop them from giving up as Stewart Reynold netted one to tie it up before half time. After that it was all Royals who applied the pressure as Marinko Maras scored a beauty from almost 30 yards out of the net, and then later in the game Stewart Reynold put home his second of the game on a penalty kick. The Royals Men went undefeated in the pre-season with two wins and a tie and now are currently sitting at second spot in Group A as well, with six points and have two games in hand up on the first place team, the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack who are on top with seven points. I< that time of year again. Douglas 20 Men’s Basketball is right around the commer with an exhibition game on Friday to start the pre-season off against the Douglas Alumni. After that the boy’s are off to Alberta for an exhibition tournament from October 1-3. The Royals will have a month to practice before igniting their regular season with back -to-back games on Friday, November fifth and the sixth against the University of Northern British Columbia. Both games will be played at eight o’clock. This year the Royals will see a new Head Coach with Clayton Pottinger, who will be thrown into the mix and hopefully make Douglas a competitive squad. Pottinger has served five years as head coach of the Kings University College in Alberta and has also played for the same University back in 1994 when he was captain and led the team to the CIS championship. With Pottinger, the Royals future is looking bright. The Women’s Basketball team will be starting on November 5" as well with back-to-back games against UNBC. That Friday night will feature a double-header with the Women’s Basketball starting at six o’clock to be followed by the Men’s squad. Make sure you stop by and get a nice dose of some good old Friday Night Basketball action.
