The hype of the fall and winter semesters is over, but with several thousand students on campus, the summer semester is no longer the laid- back, languid down-time that it used to be...it’s in the middle too, just like May. By the way, May in the Muhammadan calendar is Jumada I, and in the Jewish calendar it’s Shebat. In the Gregorian calendar, it’s just plain old May. Maybe it’s time to get on with some bits of news from around the College. Jan pens a chapter... Community Programmer Janet Knowles is a contributor to a book just published by the UBC Press. It’s called Challenge and Opportunity: Canada’s Community Colleges at the Crossroads. Edited by John D. Dennison, UBC Professor Emeritus in Adult and Higher Education, the book draws attention to the successes and problems encountered by community colleges in a rapidly changing social and economic environment. Jan’s piece is called A Matter of Survival: Emerging Entrepreneurship in Community Colleges in Canada. ...and wins some coin. Janet Knowles was the March winner of the Foundation’s 60/40 draw, taking home $823.20, with $548.80 going to student aid. The same numbers apply to Karen Turner, who won the April draw. Psychiatric Nursing Instructor Brigid Ting led a round table discussion on acupuncture, addictions and mental illness during a research conference called Changing Roles - Changing Outcomes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in April. She will also be a presenter on the same topic at a July conference at the University of Washington in Seattle. Lisa’s well... Financial Aide Clerk Lisa Barone and husband Carmen are celebrating the birth of their daughter Bianca, who was born April 17 and weighed in at 7b, 14 oz. Congratulations to all! Another spoke in Tim’s wheel... Physical Education Instructor Tim Frick appears in the Spring 95 edition of The Newswheel, a newsletter published by the B.C. Division of the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association. Tim was named B.C Coach of the Year for 1993/94, and adds that honor to his lengthy list of coaching accomplishments, including guiding the Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team to the gold medal at the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona. Staff moves... Christine Unterthiner moved from the Public Information Office to the Foundation Office as Alumni Association Officer on May 1. Kathy Wardrop took Christine’s position as Public Information Office Assistant. A paper reminder... The Purchasing Department tells us that paper costs have increased about 40% this year, and are projected to go up even more over the next two years. Keep using the WOW boxes, and try to cut down on photocopying whenever you can. Life after the Board... Myrna Popove stepped down as Board Chair a couple of years ago, but she still makes quick stops into the College, and she’ ll be making more soon as co-chair of the Pinetree Way Capital Campaign. Myrna has cleared her plate a little bit, having sold her Coquitlam gift shop, but she’s still on the board of the B.C. Centre for International Education, and she’s doing some consulting work for the Ministry. She ranks a trip to New Mexico as high on her list of things to do next. LONE Past prez appointed... Jamie McEvoy, Douglas College student and past president of the Douglas College Student Society, has been appointed to the B.C. Council on Admissions and Transfer, which promotes cooperation and communication between educational institutions on issues of an academic nature affecting students. Matrimonial Monday... Marty Sulek, Development Officer - Faculty and Alumni, will wed fiance Alison on May 15 in an outdoor ceremony. The couple plans to honeymoon in Eastern Europe. They’ ll be visiting Prague, where Marty spent a year teaching English and studying Czech a few years back. See you in June!
