Now that the public is showing signs of “protest fatigue” and anti-fur activists are gathering more lawsuits than sympathy, haughty, fur-draped models are once more striding down the catwalks at fashion shows. The fashion industry, never a busi- ness to do anything in moderation, has re-embraced fur with a vengeance. In 1985, only 45 designers were using fur. This year that number is closer to 200. In the early 90s, when fashion magazines did fur shoots, many styl- ists asked that their names not be used. This year, every fashion maga- zine has fur photos in the October issue, complete with stylists’ names. Fur, it seems, is back out of the clos- et. Designer fur-balls Many designers are using fur as they would any other fabric. Valentino says, “I use tiny borders of mink as a ruffle in my wool suitings.” However, the designers don't stop at fur trim. CB.
