'us three weeks ago, in order to discuss in The College welcomed the Western Division —— — DOUGLAS COLLEG ARCHIVES _ Mad Hatter Page 7 President's Report to College Board, April 14, 1983 A. EXTERNAL MATTERS - MUNICIPAL New Westminster City and the First Capital City Development Company Limited are con- tinuing their efforts to achieve a change in legislation, which will allow the City to make arrangements with Douglas College regarding the future of Simcoe Park. I am satisfied that both organizations are mak- ing all possible efforts in this direction. The College continues to host tour groups and meetings because of the general inter- est in the Royal Avenue facility. Today, the Chambers of Commerce from the College region combined to put on an educational display in the Concourse. Among other groups, the New Westminster University Women's Club toured the facility last week. B. EXTERNAL MATTERS - EDUCATIONAL The college hosted a luncheon meeting with senior staff of the CEIC, in order to dis- cuss possible involvement with Douglas Col- lege in CEIC (Canada Employment and Immig- ration Centre) sponsored programs. The meeting was a success, and a number of pos- sible contracts are being discussed - most- ly revolving around data processing and computer-related education. I attended ceremonies at Kwantlen College commemorating the opening of their new technological training facility in Newton. I conveyed the best wishes of Douglas Col- lege, and our pleasure in Kwantlen's dev- elopment to Mr. Wilkinson. The President of Mount Royal College, and his senior staff, spent several hours with detail our system for planning and project managing the development of the Royal Av- enue site. eee of the Canadian Association of Geographers, three weeks ago, to a very successful two- day conference of some 250 professionals and educators. I have had several meetings with Mr. Thom, and other senior staff of the B.C. Instit- ute of Technology, involving general con- siderations of the relationship between Douglas College and B.C.I.T. over the next five years. These discussions have been very useful, and will continue. I am currently involved in a number of other external activities which relate more or less directly to Douglas College's develop- ment. These include, involvement in the Lower Mainland Co-operative Planning Com- mittee and current discussions regarding a lower mainland co-operative tele-college, an "Advocacy Committee" sponsored by the B.C. Association of Colleges in cO-opera- tion with the Council of Principals, and a Ministry sponsored committee on Technologi- cal Education, with especial reference to the concept of the “polytechnic” model of education. In addition, I have been named Vice-Chairman of the Council of Principals for the next year. C. INTERNAL MATTERS - EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT The Educational Leave Committee has made its recommendations to me, and I am in the process of sending out letters to a number of faculty who will be on Educational Leave during this school year. Once the letters have been sent and confirmations received, the Board will be informed of the details of their projects. I had the pleasure of giving a lecture to a Philosophy 101 class, taught by Mr. Brian Davies, two weeks ago. I was asked to pro- vide arugments for and against liberal ed- ucation in the community college, so I found the exercise to be stimulating. Work on the 5-Year educational plan is pro- ceeding steadily. A document has now been prepared which outlines in draft form the | specific lines of development and evolution |
