_ Nove If you want a speedy synopsis of the INside Zone, here’s a preview of what we’ ve got this month: pumpkin winners, cash winners, twin boys, two marathoners, special speakers, and Accounting Office shifts. To find out who’s a new father and who ran in the Victoria Marathon, you'll have to read on. That’s a lot of pumpkin pies English instructor Stephen Dunning knows how to grow them big. After mailing away to Nova Scotia for special Giant Atlantic pumpkin seeds, Dunning and his family grew a 460-pound orange specimen which recently won top prize in an Abbotsford giant pumpkin contest. Stephen says it takes a sense of humor to grow pumpkins competitively but admits he’s got a long way to go to capture the Canadian title; Herman Bax of Brockville, Ont. recently quashed the world record by growing a 990 pounder. Double-good news Congratulations to Phys Ed’s Alan Chin who says he had to buy a minivan after his wife, Anne, gave birth to twin boys on October 5. Michael and David both weighed in at seven pounds and join sisters Elisabeth and Rebecca. The art of speaking Congratulations to Irene Griswold of Commerce and Business who recently won the New Westminster district prize in the ongoing Canada Day Speech Contest. Winners will also compete in regional districts which culminate with a national winner speaking from Parliament Hill on Canada Day. Irene is a member of Douglas College Toastmasters which meets regularly on campus; for more information contact her at 527-5457. Marathon efforts After months of training, Steve Norris of Student Services wasn’t going to let a flu LONE bug stop him from running in his first marathon on October 9. It wasn’t easy, but Norris did complete the 26-mile tour of Victoria, as did Patti Romanko of the library. The event attracted more than 1,400 entrants. Hurray for Ray Ray Fournier snapped the two-month winning streak of Karen Maynes by capturing the cash in the latest 60/40 draw. Ray earned a payday of $532.80 while $355.20 was contributed to student aid. Personnel moves As Karen Smith moves to her new home in Nanaimo, Dean Jansen of the bookstore moves into her position of Accounts Receivable/Cashier Clerk.
