INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE/NOVEMBER 15, 1988 Athletics Update 24-Team Senior Girls Volleyball Tournament; The Women’s Vol- Icyball team hosted a 24-team High School Girls Volleyball Tournament here Nov. 4 & 5 and thanks to Tim Frick’s ideas on how to set up four courts In a previous Lwo court gym (also athletic department funds to pay for it), coach Dave Dalcanale only had to book two extra courts at Burnaby Central to run his tournament. This will become an annual event (as long as Dave Dalcanale is here), and we look forward to hosting 400+ high school volleyball players next year. Hopefully, the carpets won’t be replaced in the cafetcria on that same weckend next year. Ex- Royals now attending SFU and playing for the team include Rob Patterson, Al Kussat, Brian Pascal, and our own as- sistant coach, Derek Ruppel, who scored two goals and assisted on two others. For the Royals: Al Wall, Mike Skinner, Abel Verde, Bert Neibergall, Greg Pritchard and Mike Edwards had singles. Frank Pakodzy assisted on five of the six goals. Women’s Basketball: The women’s basketball team travelled to Mount Royal College in Calgary this weekend to participate in a round robin tourna- ment. Royals faced stiff competition throughout, and although they finished with a 1-3 record, they were "in-it" most of the way, despite not having 3rd year outstanding rebounder Andrea Jackson along (injured ankle). In game one, Douglas College met Cariboo Col- lege (Kamloops), and led most of the way until Cariboo came on strong in the last five minutes to lead by eight, on strong outside shooting by Katherine Stewart. Royals applicd a tight woman-to-woman press to close within one (68-67), when Janice Halls went to the line for Douglas College with three seconds to go. Janice hit both free throws to win the game 69-68 for Douglas. Next, Royals faced eventual tourna- ment champs, Mount Royal. The lead was exchanged several times in the first half but the Royal’s shooting fell apart in the second half, and Douglas fell to Mount Royal 76-53. In game three, Douglas College faced Red Deer, an opponent who had defeated Douglas College a week earlier by 15 points. In this game, Douglas College led for the first 35 minutes, when Red Deer overtook the Royals, who had gone cold from the floor again, and were downed 62-57. Tammy Saitz and Ethel Atte led Royals scoring. In the final game, Douglas was once again matched against Cariboo. The Royals fought much harder in this game than in the first, leading much of the way by aslim margin. Cariboo, once again led by eventual tournament MVP Katherine Stewart, hung tough and tied Royal 56-56, sending the game to overtime, This time, Royals defense let them down as Cariboo ran at them hard and won 71-61. Janice Halls received an all-star for Royals, and Stephanie MacLellan was runner- up in the hot-shot shooting contest. Badminton: Cariboo College Tour- nament, November 5. Cariboo College hosted the first tournament of the badminton season. Douglas Col- lege put in a fine performance, finishing in second place to a strong Malaspina College team. Douglas lost to Malaspina 3-2 in a hard fought round, drew 2-2 with B.C.LT., defeated VCC 4-1 and Cariboo 3-2. Standings: Matches Ww L OD Won l.Malasping 4 OO O 15 2. Douglas 2 1 1 11 3. Cariboo 0 4 #O 4 Fred Smith had an excellent tourna- ment, in winning all 4 of his matches, including a hard fought win over Garth Tissington of Malaspina (3-15, 15-7, 15-12). (Garth represented Malaspina at last year’s nationals.) The mixed Douglas College team of 3-year veteran Paul Meyer and rookie Mary Wong had a fine tournament, losing only one match to a strong Malaspina team. The men’s doubles team of Kenny Kwok and Raymond Chu also had a good tournament in winning three out of four matches, losing only to B.C.1.T. Overall, it was a good start for Douglas College, in a season where all the teams (colleges) look very strong, which will lead to an excellent and very compctitive badminton season, Sports Menu: @ Nov. 18 Women’s Basketball team vs. Alumni - 6:30 pm.
