PILOT MICROCOMPUTER PROJECT IN CLASSROOMS

A pilot project to explore the use of microcomputers in public school
classrooms will be implemented by the Ministry of Education in September.

Education Minister Brian Smith announced today that 100 Apple II mic-
rocomputers will be installed in 12 school districts at a cost of
approximately $2000,000.

Purpose of the pilot project is to obtain provincial information about
the value of microcomputers as a teaching/learning aid for instruction,
tutorials and enrichment, and to develop computer literacy among students
-- knowledge of how computers work and how they affect everyday living.

School districts taking part in the pilot project are Kimberley,
Castlegar, Vernon, Delta, Maple Ridge, Howe Sound, Peace River North,
Greater Victoria, Nanaimo, Terrace, Richmond, and Penticton.

The education minster said that the planned usage for the minicomputers
would be 48 per cent in elementary schools, 31 per cent in junior sec-
ondary schools and 21 per cent in senior secondary. About 39 per cent
of usuage will be for tutorial and special education, 28 per cent for
enrichment, and the remainder for general literacy and computer science
studies. .

The Apple II microcomputers are part of the newest generation of com-
puters. They consist of a typewriter-like keyboard, a television screen
to display words and pictures, and a memory.
