With much _ publica tionin recent years as to the male domination of women in society, a growing aware- ness has set in amongst the peoples of the world. But is this awarertess enough? Not until patriarchy becomes something practiced by our forefathers, not until the ‘fabolishment of every adver- tisement degrading the image of women and not until the cessation of women it \ oT - : 7 Le, Zoe. For the men out here who are crying ‘‘What does this have to do with me?’’ stop for a moment and question to whom these films, magazines advertise- ments, etc. are directed. Are they directed at women NO they are directed at’ the males in this society. If you do not mind having your intellect insulted by a cam- aign directed at men to buy roducts, films, etc. by howing women in the most egrading fashion imagin- ble fine, but at least be onscious of the fact that the edia and advertising com- anies are using women to ell products to you. If you lon’t find this insulting then ow would you feel if wom- n countered this degrad- tion icting men_in Humanism} such a fashion. If the battle of the sexes continues this may be the next gimmick to become ‘avante-garde’. | don’t believe that the problem of male supremacy is to be solved by drawing sides and battling. What it takes is a realization that not only women are suffering under the yoke of male domination, but men are suffering as well. The role of the ‘little woman at home’ is slowly changing but what about the ‘bread-winner’ role of men imposed by this society. This issue sheds a little light that maybe we as human beings should realize that problems exist between the ways both sexes perce- ive each other. Both sexes are suffering from the mys- ticism of the sexes in that most of us believe we will never understand the op- posite sex - but how many of us have ever given a con- certed effort. Have you ever tried to imagine what it would be like if you were a woman or a man in this society? Place yourself in the other sexes shoes and maybe you will begin to see what | am talking about. In essence | feel that rather than dwelling on the prob- lems of men and women, we should begin to question the nature of the world we live in with regard to the ideol-. ogies that exist within this world. In a sense we are all bound, however little, to the societal values that have nurtured our existence. It is not until we begin to admit to ourselves that we are bound or are slaves to these ideologies that we can truly begin to progress as a race. Rather than looking for the differences between the sexes maybe we should start looking for the similarities, maybe if we seek a balance between, rather than incre- asing the already existing gap, and maybe if we begin to shut up and listen to both sides of the issue, then perhaps we can begin to progress out of the sexist quagmire we find ourselves in. The torch that | am trying to raise is one of freedom and liberty for the whole human race; a torch that applys to men and women alike; a torch that will light the way to free us from the roles present in society that bind us all to a life that sometimes seems less than human. Perhaps if we begin to challenge these ideologies and roles we can -conquer our ‘fear of flying’ _and learn to live in a world free from the shadow of sexual politics. 8 page 7 § Something of Canada’s Mcharacter died the day hay Cruise missile tests started Boverour soil. 14 New Democrats mourned “athe passing of our status as nuclear arms non-partici- Sa pant with a sho of black armbands in the House of Sue Commons question period March 6 - the day of the first Cruise missile test over western Canada. mi = ‘It is a very sad day for mall of us,’’ said Pauline iW Jewett, NDP External Af- Seafairs critic. ‘‘We have known for months that the atests were probably going~ bahead, but it is a completely different weapons in the history of the world has #4 already statred in our coun- Matry.’’ fo Jewett asked the Prime Mis Minister, now that he has fy announced his retirement, if i he would take one final ne action for the cause of inter- Neeteeeed national peace and cancel : the Cruise test agreement with the United States.
