Lam, former Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, unveiled the Douglas College Foundation’s new donor wall at the Campus named for him on February 18. Created by artist Yves Trudeau, the wall honors those who have donated $5,000 or more since January 1, 1995. “Gifts from individuals and corporations have enabled the College to provide educational opportunities that would not otherwise have been possible,” says Foundation Director Myrna Popove. “For example, Stacey is proof of what students can achieve when given support through bursaries and scholarships.” Stacey was a drug addict for 20 years before spending three years in prison. “I'd hit bottom and there was no where to go but up,” she says. “The dream of going to college was one of the things that got me through those years.” She is now a full-time Douglas College student. A grant allowed Stacey to begin school in 1998, but necessities such as school supplies and food were out of reach. Two Foundation bursaries allowed her to stock her cupboards and purchase other important items. Today, Stacey is in her third semester at Douglas College and has consistently maintained straight A’s. She begins work towards a Business Diploma this Fall, and plans to attend university in the future. “It is very likely that The Honorable David C. Lam and donor wall artist Yves Trudeau admire the newly unveiled donor wall at the David Lam Campus in Coquitlam. my education and my new life would still be a dream had I not been granted these awards,” she says. If you would like to make a donation to the Foundation, fill out a pledge card and designate it to a specific endowment or program, or call the Foundation at 5875. Douglas College employee donations are double-matched by the provincial government and the College, and are tax-deductible. The Network’s purpose is to promote dialogue in the College community on major change initiatives and issues impacting post-secondary educational institutions. “The Network provides an efficient way to converse,” says Educational Technology Coordinator Susan Greathouse. “It’s also a mechanism to disseminate information and share resources. We hope that the network will be used to promote constructive academic discourse with a broad group of individuals.” The members of the cross-college developmental team who developed the Network include Diana Christie, Carol Ebner-Howorth, Susan Greathouse, Brenda Jack, Wilma McCrossan, Beverley Miller, Nancy Oike and John McKendry.
