But this weekend, as the grand finale to the 20th Anniversary celebrations, Douglas College is having an open house. Open House ’90 stresses the “community” in community col- lege, says event coordinator Chris- tina Symons, and that means the celebration offers something for everyone. Features range from musical theatre, special effects NOVEMBER 13, 1990 Alumni Social. Coquitlam Campus Cat’ s Paw Play Action! computers and back-to-basics play centers to free courses. “We're a community-focused institution and that’s what the open house shows,” said Symons. “This is a great chance for people to become more aware of what we have to offer and it’s certainly not just academic.” For instance, Douglas College’s Community Programs and Services division presents con- tinuing evening and weekend courses on everything from marketing to dealing with depres- sion. During Open House ’90, you can take a free mini course (one — two hours) yourself. More than 30 classes on health, music, personal computers, personal improvement and other topics will be presented. Registration begins 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, or call 527-5473. Families visiting Open House ‘90 will receive an education of a different kind. The subject is old- fashioned, no-video-screen fun and the lessons will be dispensed both days at various Kids World sites on campus. “This isn’t a baby sitting area, the parents can also get involved,” said Symons. "The focus will be on things like interactive play, ethnic play, arts and crafts which teach recycling and games in which children move around to develop their motor skills.” Other groups moving around will be the Douglas College music guiii. ARCHIVES and theatre departments as they present Guys and Dolls at the on- campus Performing Arts Theatre. The classic musical with songs like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat” runs Nov. 9-10 and Nov. 13-17 with 8:00 p.m. shows. There are matinees on Sunday, November 11 and 18 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $9 and $6 for students and seniors, and are avail- able by calling 527-5393. College music students will perform mini- recitals, while theatre specialists demonstrate the fine art of apply- ing makeup. Departments such as Com- merce, Science, Nursing, English and Social Sciences will present their own displays with the em- phasis on interactive participation, and an open door to many regular classes on Friday.
