INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / July 23, 1991 Staff and faculty profiles Language and Cultural Assistant Lani Hyde Des College may not be able to offer miles of white, sandy beaches or great scuba diving, but Lani Hyde doesn’t mind the atmosphere here one bit. Hyde, 26, is the new Language and Cultural Assistant with the ESL Department. The UBC graduate in Leisure and Recreation attended Douglas College for one year and worked here three summers as an ESL monitor. Along the way, she also spent two seasons as a recreation direc- tor at a Cuban resort. Hyde confessed that yes, spending two winters in a lush, tropical paradise was “a very good experience” but added she was pleased to return to rain-swept Douglas College. “T really enjoyed my time here, that’s why I kept coming back. At the College I found a professional group of people and a friendly group of people. I felt very supported in terms of professional and personal growth.” Hyde will have a variety of duties in her new position but her main responsibility will be coordinating the Language Partner Program be- tween ESL students and College and community volunteers. A native of New Westminster, Hyde is fluent in Spanish and is current- ly studying German. A reformed triathlete who has seen the error of her over-training ways, she is still an avid cyclist and runner who also finds time for reading, movies and music.
