Mad Hatter Page 2 APPROVED BY DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD APPLIES TO ALL AT THEIR APRIL 14, 1983 MEETING COLLEGE EMPLOYEES PREAMBLE POLICY DEFINITION REGULATIONS. Conflict of Interest Statement Douglas College encourages its employees to play active roles in the College and the community. It recognizes that, from time to time, employees may find that this involvement may put them in direct or potential conflict with their formal College roles. It is the policy of Douglas College that employees shall not act in conflict of interest with their formal College roles. A conflict of interest is a situation in which an employee: (1) by virtue of his or her position in the College could directly or indirectly receive a benefit beyond his or her normal terms of employment, (2) is in a position to affect the terms and conditions of employ- ment of another employee, exclusive of the rights and duties outlined in collective agreements and the working conditions for excluded administrative personnel, (3) engage in activities which impair or prevent the College or employee from carrying out its responsibilities. It is the practice of Douglas College to assist its employees to avoid conflict of interest situations by encouraging individuals to identify these situations and to provide a mechanism to resolve them in advance. When an employee anticipates that he or she will be in a conflict of interest situation, the circumstances shall be reviewed with the individual's supervisor. A recommendation on the resolution of the potential conflict of interest shall be sent to the College officer to whom the supervisor reports. Approval of recommendation absolves the employee of any conflict of interest. In cases of doubt, expressed prior approval of the action by an immediate supervisor removes the employee from the conflict of interest. Any appeal of a recommendation regarding an anticipated conflict of interest situation, once approved, shall be through normal College procedures. 2
