IN Douglas College N d ‘ e September 1999 The Douglas College Newsletter @ New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus & Thomas Haney Campus Enrolment numbers up; news at eleven College involved in cultural partnership A three-way partnership between Douglas College, Fudan University in Shanghai and the Chinese Cultural Regeneration Research Society (CRRS) of Burnaby will work to enhance the understanding of cultures between Canada and China. This project, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), will give College faculty significant recognition for their work at Fudan. “This partnership is very important in terms of civil liberties, rights and rule of law,” says Vice President of Instruction John McKendry. “Douglas faculty will work in tandem with the faculty of Fudan University, one of the oldest universities in China.” Criminology faculty members Beth de Beer, Cynthia Fulton, Noah Neaman and Sussan Thomson will facilitate seminars and public engagement activities at Fudan University in civil liberties, human rights, rules of law, governance structures and a corrupt-free society from the Canadian perspective. As well, a number of students from Fudan University will attend seminars at Douglas College. Thanks to the combined efforts of faculty, Dean Terry Farrell and our special emissary to Shanghai, Dr. Guangwei Ouyang, this symbolic partnership will occur over the next year. CRRS, the principal partner, is a non-profit organization with the mission of fostering cultural understanding between Canada and China. Global TV interviewed Registrar Trish Angus on August 19 about the rise in enrolment at Douglas College. “We have 300 more students registered over the same time last year,” said Angus, but reminded veiwers that “we still have three and a half weeks to go for registration." It appears that the big gain is in university transfer programs but no analysis has been done yet to determine A family affair Graduation day was extra special for this family as they celebrated three generations of psychiatric nurses. Douglas College psychiatric nursing graduate Katherine Hunt (right) poses with her mother, Douglas College Psychiatric Nursing instructor Caroline Hunt (left) and her grandmother, retired Pyschiatric Nurse Margaret Cope (centre). Congratulations to all! Wine and dine with the Foundation specifically which programs were up. When asked if she could tell students one important thing about coming to College, Angus replied “apply early." Innovative system comes to the Library On August 1, 1999, the College signed a contract with Innovative Interfaces for the purchase of a new library automated system to replace the aging INLEX system. What does this mean for library users? The biggest improvement will be that the library’s catalogue will be available via the Web and may be accessed 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world. It will also be possible to limit searches of the catalogue to material type or to a specific campus. Secure self-serve options, such as the ability to view material checked out, renew material, and place holds and bookings, will be introduced once the system is up and running smoothly. While these enhancements are exciting, there will undoubtedly be some “interesting” things happening during the transition period. The crux will come later in the Fall semester as the library prepares to go live before January 2000. Please be patient with library staff as they learn to use the system, and stay tuned for further developinents and updates. If you have any questions, please contact Patti Romanko at local 5183 or Susan Ashcroft at local 5189. The Douglas College Foundation invites you to A Class Act, their annual wine tasting event, being held November 10 in Coquitlam.
