EDUCATOR'’S TOUR TO JAPAN

Canadian educators have long realized the merits of the Japanese educational system. On July 10 - 26,
Douglas College will provide a unique opportunity for educators to experience this educational system
on the second annual Teacher's Educational Study Tour to Japan.

This tour promises to provide an overview of Japan's educational system through visits to elementary,
junior and senior high schools, colleges and universities, as well as valuable insights into the social,

industrial and cultural ways of life in Japan.

"The United Nations has recognized the achievements of the Japanese education system, particulary
in the areas of science and mathematics," says Tad Hosol, this year's tour host. "The system is more
rigid and there is much more pressure than in Canadian schools, but it is highly motivation-oriented,"

says Hosoi.

As a native of Kyoto, Tad Hosoi, a Japanese language instructor at Douglas College and at the
Department of Asian Studies at U.B.C., will be a valuable source of information for educators who

wish to plan after-tour excursions.

"Many Canadian educator's realize they can learn a lot from Japan," says Hosoi. "This tour, the only

one of its kind, will provide them with the knowledge and experience that is impossible to gain from
textbooks."

Last year's tour included educator's from school districts in British Columbia and Alberta. Many

 

gained first-hand experience when they volunteered to teach English language
