November 19, 2003 continued from page 26 third period charge by the Wild in a game that was eerily reminiscent of last year’s playoffs. A nationwide audience on Hockey Night In Canada was treated to rough play, big hits, and a more skillful Canucks team being out skated by the pesky Wild throughout the third period. Perennial black sheep and former cross-dresser Alexandre Daigle was the games second star, with Bertuzzi the first, and Cloutier the third. The Canucks remained unbeat- en at home with a 4-3 win. Tuesday featured the second half of the home and home, with the Canucks in Minnesota. Ed Jovonovski missed the game with a Charlie-horse, and he didn't miss much. The game was a snoozer, with the highlight being Bertuzzi finally ragdolling Wild defenseman Willie Mitchell in the sec- ond period. The game featured Mick Magoo, which is weird because he was one of the two referees. Every flamboy- ant call Magoo makes screams, “Look at me mom! I’m soooo dramatic! I’m a star!” He’s a prima donna and a crappy ref. Have another donut, fatboy. It sure makes me miss Paul Stewart, the best NHL ref I’ve seen in my lifetime. The Wild managed to stay awake for the entire three periods, and were rewarded with a 1-0 win. The Canucks dropped to a game under .500 on the road this season. After surviving Tuesday's trap filled sleeper, I was fired up to watch the Canucks go to war with the Philadelphia Flyers. The old Broadstreet Bullies. A big, talented, fast-skating team with a mean streak should be just the right remedy to restore my faith in the NHL. Oh yeah, Ken Hitchcock, another trapping coach, now coaches the Flyers. What a freaking shame to see a team with the Flyer’s depth playing that boring brand of hockey. The Canucks are built for speed, scoring, and firebrand hockey; the Flyers spent most of the night interfering, tackling, hooking, and generally playing a Hitchcock-type of game. I’m beginning to believe that team owners are the only people that can ever put regular season NHL hock- ey back on track. If the owners give a firm directive to their teams that trap hockey will not be tolerated, teams would have to go back to opening up offensively and taking some chances. The game has been a business for a long time, but unfortunately, the cus- tomer is not king. More and more fans (especially young ones) are quickly tir- ing of the type of hockey we see too often these days. I hate to beat a dead horse, but this one has been looking at me funny for a long time now, so I'm gonna beat it. Without more scoring, hockey is losing fans en masse. Without fans, lucrative TV, advertis- ing, and ticket revenue dollars will soon be dwindling. Without dollars, no fat contracts and moneymaking hockey teams. No teams, no hockey. Get it together and do what's right to keep your business’ healthy. Owners, outlaw the trap and save our game. Thank the Gods that our ‘Nucks are one of the last bastions of a team play- ing the game the way it should be, free- wheeling and fast-paced. Meanwhile, back in Philly, the game was another drab affair for the first 59 minutes and 52 seconds, until Todd Bertuzzi tied it up at three in a goal- mouth scramble. The Canucks carried Sports the play for the bulk of the night, but were lucky to get the single point (for the tie), and lost 4-3 on Simone Gagne’s overtime winner. A bonehead clearing pass by “the Crisco Kid,” Brent Sopel, set up Gagne’s goal. Although a plus on the offensive end of the rink, Sopel continues to be a defen- sive liability, and needs to have his ice time drastically reduced. I shudder to think what he'd be like without his stalwart defensive partner Mattius Ohlund. Jason King scored the Canucks first goal, his sixth in the last six games. The play was a perfect exam- ple of how to beat the trap, with long (and often risky) cross-ice passes. I’m glad Lemaire and Hitchcock are behind us for now. The upcoming week sees the Canucks going old skool, with games against Boston, Montreal, Chicago, and Toronto, all original six teams. I guess it’s high time for some original-six, ass-kicking. Keep your head up, your stick on the ice, and never be afraid to go into the Canucks Corner. I’m out like both Michaels | know; see ya next week.
