TOURNMENT RESULTS (Men’s Side): Ist -OKANAGAN 2nd- VCC 3rd- DOUGLAS 4th - CARIBOO Sth - CBC Men's Rugby Team Opens Up For Competition by Stuart Jetté On Oct.17, Douglas College’s mens rugby team travelled to Western Washington University to launch defense of their 1993 Northen Collegiate Rugby Union (NCRU) Championship title. While the game marked the start of a new season, it also introduced a relatively young Royals team to collegiate rugby. With only a few experienced veterans, added to the fact that coach Mike Collins was in Victoria with the women’s team, the Royals had every reason low down to defeat before the game even started. But surrender was not in the Douglas College vocabulry. The team played fiercely, with the coaching and leadership void that was admirably filled by the veterans. Lack of team cohension and jitters lead to a 3-0 score in favour of the host Vikings, but the Royals came out fighting in the second half, scoring an unanswered 19 points enroute to a 19-3 victory. The win was convincing and supported by strong performances by team captain Bill LaCroix, Jeff Stromgren, Derek Hill, Trevor Felts and the ageless veteran Craig Anderson. Douglas College Rugby offers a fine tradition of good rugby and scholastic achievement as well as a healthy social like around the college. Practices are Wednesdays at 4:30pm at Queens Park. New players are always welcome. See you on the pitch!
