INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / DECEMBER 12, 1989 Golf Champion continued from page 1 Douglas College Takes Silver Medal Parry agrees that his driving is his best overall strength. This tour- nament, however, he feels it was his putting that made the difference. He says playing in the tournament was really fun. Although he had won a day tournament before, this was the first big event he ever won. “It was really good experience for me.” In the overall team competi- tion, however, Malaspina finished on top, with Douglas College taking the silver medal. Cariboo College finished third, Fraser Valley fourth, and Royal Roads Military College rounded out the five-team league. The colleges played four 36- hole tournaments at different cour- ses throughout the province. This year, the four courses were Fair Winds in Schooner Cover, Parksville, River Shore in Kam- loops, Ledge View in Abbotsford, and Seymour in North Vancouver. The colleges also invited several university teams to join the Inside Douglas College is published weekly September through April and bi-monthly May through August by the Douglas College Public Information Office. The University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and Bellevue Com- munity College in Washington all sent teams, so there was always plenty of competition for the gol- fers. Each team entered four golfers per course and the school’s best three scores each round were com- bined to calculate the aggregate team score. This year, Douglas College fielded a six-man team made up of Parry, Killins, Fred Ledlin, Steve Adrain, Doug Crone, and Brent Barichello. Next year, all but Adrain should be returning, so van Niekerk is optimistic about his team’s chances in future competi- tion. In the spring, van Niekerk will be taking his golfers down to several tournaments in the United States. He says the competition there will be much tougher, as they will be playing primarily against university teams from Washington, where coaches have four years to season their golfers. However, van Niekerk feels the calibre of competi- tion will provide good experience for his team. Although they finished short of the top spot, van Niekerk says he’s pleased with his golfers’ perfor- mance. Last year, the College won the overall aggregate for athletics in its conference. The championship is based on the standings in each team sport, so as defending cham- pions, Douglas College athletes have the extra pressure of trying to repeat last year’s success. Van Niekerk says the golfers feel they've been able to contribute to this goal.
