INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / June 25, 1991 Personnel receptionist Lisa Barone Meeting And Helping People Are Personnel Receptionist’s Duties li you walk into the Personnel office with a question, chances are you will be greeted witha smile from Lisa Barone. Barone has been the receptionist in Personnel since February and says she meets a wide variety of people with a wide variety of ques- tions in her job. "People come through here as- king for all kinds of information," says Barone, 24. "If they don’t know where to go about some- thing they often come here first." Barone’s job also gives her an opportunity to glimpse how people handle pre-interview jitters. However, if there is a connection between how a candidate deals with the wait and subsequent hiring success, Barone is too busy answering calls and dealing with other duties to take notes. "I write the letters, she says, but I do not make the decisions." Barone worked in the clerical and secretarial field for four years before joining Douglas College. Her outside interests include dab- bling with pencil drawing; she is also studying psychology in her spare time. She strives to keep fit by squeezing in an aerobics ses- sion before work. She also enjoys tennis and cycling around New Westminster, "despite all those hills," she laughs. Readerboard Policies Now In Place Cc flips, and rolls will brighten up your departments’s message when it appears on the new readerboard sign on the corner of 8th Street and Royal Avenue. College Publicist Brad Barber says that a complete set of reader- board guidelines is now in place. "We hope the sign makes the College a more welcoming place," says Barber. "It’s used to inform the community about all the things that are happening here. Because Douglas College is built low into the hill, in the past people have driven by without knowing we are here." Departments likely to use it are Music, Theatre, Athletics, Com- munity Programs & Services, the Office of the Registrar, and the Student Society. As well, ona trial basis, people will be able to broadcast personal messages such as weddings or birthdays for a $50 contribution to the Douglas College Foundation. To get your department's mes- sage onto the readerboard, contact Brad Barber at 5326. well as Wendy Davies. Thank you To the P.D. Day Committee for the recent workshops for B.C.G.E.U. members. The workshops I attended were infor- mative and well-presented. I realize the amount of work that went into organizing such a well-run day and appreciate the efforts made by Wendy Waidson and Candice Phillips as Kathleen Wallden
