When you obtain your vial, fill out WHAT IS THE VIAL OF LIFE? @ The Vial of Life is a small plastic cylinder designed to contain pertinent medical information on the various members of your household - information that could save a life in a medical emergency. You may know you are healthy, but the ambulance attendant called in to assist you in an emergency will not know. And, without that information, he may be hesitant to administer beneficial treatments for fear of making your condition worse. The Vial of Life will provide him with the necessary information to make the correct decision quickly and begin treatment as soon as possible. In a medical emergency, time is of the essence - not only at the scene of the emergency, but for follow-up treatment once the victim has been transported to hospital. The medical form in the Vial of Life contains all the information required for immediate admittance to hospital, the name and phone number of the victim's personal physician and a reference to where the hospital staff can obtain a detailed medical history of the victim. This type of information will contribute substan- tially to a fast and accurate diagnosis and will enable the attending physician to begin proper treatment much sooner. The Vial of Life can also be of critical importance in determining proper emergency treatment for victims who have a primary language other than English. HOW DOES THE PROGRAM -WORK? — The Vial of Life kit is comprised of a plastic vial, a medical form, @ the medical form for yourself and the various members of your household. When you have completed the form, fold it down to fit into the plastic vial. Place it in the vial and attach the vial to the underside of the top shelf of your refrigeratator door. Medical personnel responding to an emergency call will make a point of checking the refrigerator door to see if the household is a part of the Vial of Life program. HOW DO I GET A VIAL OF LIFE? Distribution of the Vial of Life kits has been handled by a wide variety of different organizations in different communities; from service clubs to local police and fire departments, to charitable organ- izations like the Red Cross.
