Arts alive in April A theatrical search for spiritual truth, one of opera’s greatest love stories, a big band blast, a historic mass by Haydn, paper made from corn husks; it’s going to be a busy April for the arts at Douglas College. The month opens with the Theatre Depart- ment’s presentation of Agnes of God, running through April 10 in the Studio Theatre. The play follows Dr. Martha Liv- ingstone, a court-appointed psychologist assigned to determine the sanity of a young nun suspected of killing her own baby. It twists into an investigation of be- liefs in which nothing is clear-cut. That's what intrigued director Cheryl Matheson. "A lot of the play is about things being what we perceive them to be," says Matheson. "In her search for the truth, Livingstone forces three women, herself included, to face some harsh realities in their own lives and to re-examine the meaning of faith and the commitment of love." On April 7, the Vancouver Opera offers a free 90-minute version of Puccini’s La Bo- heme at noon in the Performing Arts Theatre. Puccini’s fourth and best-loved opera explores the tragic love affair of impoverished artists living in Paris. The touring production features members of the Vancouver Opera company along with their costumes, lighting and piano accompaniment. The College Jazz and Big bands plus the Vocal Jazz Ensemble take the stage on April 8 at 8pm to present An Evening of Jazz. Director Blair Fisher promises an evening of varied musical styles ranging from Tower of Power to traditional swing. The performing arts conclude for the month with the Douglas College Choral Society’s concerts on April 17 and 18 featuring Haydn’s Nelson Mass along with works by Scarlatti and Telemann. The Nelson Mass was written in a remark- able 53 days by the celebrated Austrian composer back in 1798, while at the same time British Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson was winning the Battle of the Nile off Egypt. The dramatic work quickly became known as the Nelson Mass every- where except, strangely, in England, application form.
