President’s Report highlights -August I have contacted the Mayors of the five cities and municipalities contained within School District #43 (Coquitlam) with the aim of making a coordinated appeal for student aid support (scholarships and bursaries) targeted for the new Pinetree Campus. I had a lengthy and informative visit with Coquitlam’s Mayor Sekora on July 18, in order to discuss future fund- raising activities. I have received and dealt with three Student Appeals/Complaints. The Board should be aware that a radically increasing number of individuals involved in appeals are choosing to appeal to my office following the finding of the constituted Appeal Committee. This increasingly litigious response is subtly, but powerfully changing the role of the Appeals Committee, and the office of the President itself. It is worth noting that the MNsoe_weorwarion INside Douglas College is published the first Tuesday of every month by the Public Information Office and the College Duplicating Centre. The next issue will appear September 5. Deadline for submission for next issue is noon Tuesday, August 15. Submissions on floppy disk in WordPerfect or ASCII format would be appreciated. Material may be edited for brevity and clarity. Tips, scoops and suggestions are always welcome. V3L 5B2 Assistant to the President now spends approximately 10 percent of her time dealing with appeals against the Appeals Committee. Since June 19, I have had six meetings and presentations to recruit volunteers to our Pinetree Capital Campaign. I have made three direct requests for substantial aid and made three presentations to groups whom we calculate will be of assistance to us in the future. On July 4, Jim Doerr and I met with Tom Harris, District Superintendent of Schools for Coquitlam, in order to discuss succession arrangements, in light of the complex and strategic agreements we have with that School District. From July 10-12, incoming-President Susan Hunter-Harvey was in attendance at the College, meeting with various personnel. Dr. Hunter-Harvey and I met and discussed at length a number of activties to which the College was committed and that would involve her over the fall and winter. As approved by the Board, I will be spending my last day on the job at Douglas College on Thursday, August 31. I will formally leave the employ of Douglas College on October 15, following my holidays. I will be naming an Acting CEO prior to the end of August who will bridge the two-week period between my departure and Dr. Hunter-Harvey’s assumption of her new role. Dr. Hunter-Harvey has requested that I continue, for the immediate future and in a volunteer capacity, to work with the College Foundation on the Capital Campaign. I intend to do so.
