Now that another Registra- tion Week is behind us, here’s an update on what some of the locals have been up to. Walk, don’t run... Not content with a recent splashy spread in the Vancouver Province about youth recreation, CHRIS JOHNSON has started an informal program of noon-hour fitness walking sessions. Everyone is invited for the brisk 30- to 40-minute jaunts "when you can walk with other employees and talk out the world’s problems." Wear com- fortable walking or running shoes and workout clothes, and meet at noon out- side the weight room (Rm 1323). New kids on the block... News flash! Congratulations to JANE MUSKENS of the Public Infor- mation Office. Jane and John brought a baby boy, Connor, into the world on Jan.17. Congrats also to Biology Instructor NINA MUNTEANU, who gave birth to a baby boy, Kevin Daniel, on Dec. 13. Hats off to Tatsuo... Douglas College Choral Society director TATSUO HOSHINA earned praise for his role as substitute con- ductor with the Handel Society of Music during its holiday perfor- mance of Handel’s Messiah in White Rock. Hoshina, who had just led the Choral Society’s own production of the Messiah, replaced Handel Society conductor Karel Ten Hoope, who had fallen ill. With time for only a single rehearsal with the Royals basketball teams didn’t rest much over Christmas. The men’s squad journeyed to Florida for a series of four games against American colleges and a team from Sweden. This is a shot of action against Edison College, with Royals freshman point guard Tony Pomonis going up for a jump shot. Royals went one and three against extremely tough competition; their opponents were mainly future NCAA Division One players. Despite the tough losses, the trip paid off, as the Royals returned home to sweep Fraser Valley and Cariboo College in the first two games of the New Year. Their league record as of Jan. 13 stood at three wins, no + losses. group, the Peace Arch News reported: "Hoshina directed an as- sured and virtually seamless performance." Coming and going... Welcome back to Public Informa- tion Officer BILL BELL, who returned to the PIO from a disability leave, and to Mathematics Instructor AL HARMS, who returned from a year at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Nairobi, Kenya... meanwhile, JAN HUMPHREY of VLIT will be getting back to campus a little later than ex- pected. Jan was due back from professional development on Jan. 20 but broke her leg while visiting fami- ly in Texas. Holiday hoppin’... Just a quick survey revealed the following travel adventures: DIANE EMMERICH (Psych Nursing) and BRUCE LIVINGSTONE (PIO) both went down Mexico way; DEBBIE MCFADYEN (Foundation Office) and KAREN HOWAY (Psych Nursing) visited Hawaii while AL LAWSON (Math) relaxed on a Caribbean cruise. Elsewhere, SUE FRASER (ECE) spent Christmas with family in South Africa, INGRID CURREY (Psych Nurs- ing) visited family in Sweden, while HELEN ZOELLMER (Modern Lan- guages) travelled to Germany. MUMTAZ GILANI (Math) visited Pakistan and JIM DAVIES (Philosophy) toured Egypt and Israel. In Therapeutic Rec, DAN McDONALD went to Winnipeg while BARBARA YOST lounged in Baja California. Remember...
