INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / November 26, 1991 THE ANSIDE ZONE by Carillon Douglas College student Olga Smith poses with two catty but cuddly friends. Smith won the big kitty (left) in the Tomcat Calendar Contest draw sponsored by the bookstore. We went hunting for campus gos- sip, but most people were too busy or too tired to talk to us, or couldn’t remember any scuttlebutt. The reason is the season; final exams are looming, and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Anyway, here’s what we found out. More goodbyes... Personnel’s Joanne Campbell has gone back to her ex-employer, Seabury & Smith (an insurance broker) as their Customer Service Assistant/Benefits Technician. The twist here is that her replacement, Janet Westwood, is leaving Seabury & Smith to come to Douglas Col- lege. Wynne Simmer from the Accounting Department has taken an Administrative Assistant position with a New Westminster accounting firm. The Mailroom’s Dawn Makey is gone, but not to another job. She’s going south on her cycle, and may head for Australia in February with the Christian Biker’s Associa- tion. It’s a long, wet ride to Down Under, so she’s decided to fly in- stead. Former library employee Pam St. Denise has completed her Masters in Library Science, but isn’t coming back to DC. She was of- fered a position in Victoria as the Reference Librarian in the Legisla- tive Library. Goodbye and good luck to all of you! A Young boy... Laurel Young, wife of the Theatre Department’s Drew, had a baby, Nolan Bryson, on Nov. 17. He is a brother to Travis. Miso soup with Mike... Tad Hosoi joined Mike Har- court for the part of the new premier’s Asian tour promoting business in B.C.. The first stop on the tour was Japan, where B.C. Week was held at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo. Tad was one of three repre- sentatives for B.C. post-secondary education. Let them eat cake... Bill Reed from the Chemistry Department recently celebrated his 50th birthday. Also on the list are English and Communications Chairperson Lorna McCallum, and Building Service Worker Bob Gor- don, while Foundation Director Mark Crozet’s 29th is upcoming. Victory is sweet... Last week Mark and other Fourth Floor Fossils Brad Barber, Lisa Barone, Alana Frymire, Peter Sanderson, Dave Dalcanale and Bob Cowin (if these people are fossils, what are we?) won an in- tramural futsal game, 2-1, sky- rocketing from last place into second-last place. They’re Havana little fun... It looks like the women’s vol- leyball team will be travelling to Cuba in January to train and play some exhibition matches against the usually formidable Cubans. The team raised $6,500 during a vol- leyball marathon earlier this month. Author, author... Event Magazine editor Dale Zieroth informs us that BCTV News visited him and his family in North Vancouver to do a story on the recent publication of a collection of his poetry entitled The Weight of My Raggedy Skin.
