Employees and significant others kayaked for three hours, hiked and played on the beach as part of an event coordinated by the Centre for Sport, Recreation and Wellness. Upcoming activities include a Grouse Grind hike (Sept 16), river rafting on the Thompson River (Sept 23), and a Whistler overnight adventure (Oct 14-15). Briefly Kudos Congratulations to Ted James, Dean of Student Development, and Doris Good of Vancouver, who were married on July 30 at Swan-e-Set Country Club. Karen McKitrick in Financial Aid graduated from SFU with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in June — one in English and the other in History and Humanities. July’s 60/40 employee lottery winner was Angela Parfeniuk of Commerce & Business. Angela takes home $792, and student aid increases by $528. Congratulations, Angela! Congratulations to Centre 2000 Community and Contract Services for achieving ISO 9001 registration. Being International Standards Organization-registered means that Centre 2000 has met a demanding international standard for quality and excellence in customer service, which is aligned with Douglas College Strategic Directions. The success is the result of an enthusiastic and dedicated team effort by the staff of Centre 2000 since September 1999. Centre 2000 is the first post-secondary institution in BC to achieve ISO 9001 registration, according to Julian Gardiner, Centre 2000 Quality Manager. Writers Digest has ranked Event magazine as one of the top “Fiction 50” magazines of North America. Stephen Guppy’s “The Light of Distant Planets” (Event 28/ 1) is to be included in the Best Canadian Stories 2000 anthology. Corrie has been in the United Arab Emirates for the past year, and is enjoying it enough to stay for a while.
