Multimedia support for the Learning Centre ‘The Learning Centre has received a $25, 000 grant from the Inukshulk Fund — a partnership between Bell Canada and Rogers Communications — to develop multimedia learning resources. The Centre will use the funds to hire students to help create presentations about a variety of study skills, such as time management and note taking that will be available on the Learning Centre's website. Dispensing Optician students see success ‘Two Douglas College students have earned scholarships from ‘Transitions Optical, an Ontario-based company that has launched a new annual scholarship program. Dispensing Optician students Esther Pike and Delana Russell will each receive $500 scholarships. The Transitions Healthy Sight for Life Fund was created to raise awareness of the need for eye protection, eye exams and the enhancement of visual quality. Briefly Employee Relations at the David Lam Campus is operational. Service is available on Monday and Tuesday (Tania Dong) plus Thursday and Friday (Wendy Davies). The ER room number and local will be finalized once the offices have been allocated. Vv The Departments of Theatre and Stagecraft drew record-breaking audiences for their Fall 2007 productions. The Studio Theatre production of A Macbeth drew the largest audience for that space with every performance sold out. Ten Lost Years brought the fifth-largest audience into the Performing Arts Theatre. In 2008, ‘Theatre and Stagecraft will celebrate their tooth production in March with a production of Dracula. CRWR instructor Rick Maddocks is piloting Memoir Writing while Meg Stainsby, English instructor, teaches Introduction to the Literature of Life Writing. Vv The winner of the 20-pe Cappuccino Set, offered in a draw by the Health Care Support Worker program, is Seokyung (Christine) Ko, a student in the program. All proceeds from this draw go to the Rafaela Wilson Memorial Fund. v Child and Youth Care Counsellor instructor Ross Gibson recently completed his Masters in Education at the University of Phoenix. Vv English instructor Janis Harper has edited a literary anthology, Body Breakdowns: Tales of Illness and Recovery, which was recently published by Anvil Press. The 21 contributors tell very personal, true stories about brushes with mortality and the medical establishment, especially at middle age. Vv Nancy Newman, Community Social Service Worker Program instructor, is co- author of Street Stories: 100 Years of Homelessness in Vancouver. Developed with co-author Michael Barnholden and photographer Lindsay Mearns, the book examines the social and political responses to the issues of homelessness over the past century. v History instructor Frank Leonard published two major articles in 2007. Diplomatic Forces of the New Railroad: Transcontinental Terminus Entry at Vancouver and Seattle was published in the European-based Journal of Transport History (March 2007). BC Studies published Railroading a Renegade: Great Northern Ousts John Hendry in Vancouver, (Autumn 2007). Vv The Registrar's Office welcomes Vanessa Bailey- Smith as a permanent Information Services Assistant at the David Lam Campus replacing Cathy Gibney who has retired. Curtis Harling joins the Co-operative Education department as a Co-operative Education Placement Officer. ‘The Library congratulates Eleanore Dunne and Jo-Anne Webb as they begin retirement - collectively they have spent more than 50 years in the college community.
