MAD HATTER 2 Poetry Accessible to the Reader But while Zieroth's description makes his poetry sound ambiguous, it is not inacces- sible to the reader. His sense of place, of experience and of feeling are expressed in forms that are recognizable. Night storms, child birth, prairie life and family relations are some of the common strata that give shape to his new book. And a large portion of his poems are concerned with unearthing his past - his ancestors, his childhood, early life on the prairies - a shared past for many Canadians, but one which has been given little attention in history. "There's a sense in Canada that we don't have a past. | didn't know my grandfather - he had been interned during the war - and | didn't know my grandmother well, but | felt the need to let them speak through me," says Zieroth. "I've had to create my own past." Let the People Have Their Own Voice Zieroth says he learns from letting others speak in his poetry. A new perspective on people, particularly women, is established by letting them have their own voice. "| was tired of hearing my own voice. If you take on another persona the poem takes on a life of its own and you have to follow it. You gain more energy that way." Zieroth does not seem to have problems with energy though. In addition to his work as poet, Zieroth is also a creative writing instructor at Douglas and Kwantlen Colleges and a father of two children, and editor of event magazine, a literary journal published by Douglas College. In the summers he also teaches at the Banff School of Fine Arts. "When the Stones Fly Up" is Zieroth's third book of poetry following "Clearing: Poems from a Journey", 1973 and "Mid River" in 1981. Selections from his earlier work have also been published in anthologies, including "Soundings", "Mindscapes", and Al Purdy's "Storm Warning". "When the Stones Fly Up", published by Anansi Press is available in paperback for $8.95 in the Douglas College bookstore and other bookstores throughout the Lower Mainland.
