March 10, 2008 The poor, ignored campuses LETTER FROM THE EDITOR | I feel bad for the Coquitlam Campus sometimes. It’s so big and pretty and nice, but too often it’s given the short end of the attention stick. Nothing important British during the colonial times: a sort of vague awareness that they exist, and a general acceptance that they probably have unique needs that we don’t completely understand, but also a bored acceptance of the fact that actually trying to care would be far more trouble than it’s worth. The Other Press has been as guilty as anyone in perpetuating such attitudes, but we're trying to change. Even though our paper is largely staffed by New Westers, we had our first-ever staff meeting / open house at David Lam last week. Though not too many of you showed up, I remain committed to the idea of “rotating - campus” staff meetings, so hopefully you’ll be seeing us again: at Coquitlam soon. Distribution of / ic at Douglas has its headquarters there; at is best all they have are lonely little branch plant offices of New West —— Smoking ban reeks of big goverment Dear Editor, In the February 24th issue of The Other Press Aimee Oullette, the Opinions Editor, expressed that “it’s about damn time” that smoking was banned in cars where children are present. While I agree with the Ontario doctors’ opinions that second hand smoke is harmful to children, the government would be crossing a line if they start restricting what one can do in their own private property. I am not saying for one second that I agree with smoking around children; it is inconsiderate and irresponsible. Smokers should have more common sense than to expose an innocent youngster to that type of environment. However, if the Canadian government enforces this rule, what is next? Are they then going to say that a person cannot smoke in their own homes if children are present? This is crossing a significant line. We need to protect our private lives and restrict how much we allow the government to dictate what happens in our homes and vehicles. Smokers—if you want the government to butt out of your homes, bedrooms, vehicles and all other areas of your private life, then take responsibility and butt out around your kids. Save us all from the slippery slope of invasion of privacy. Don’t impose your dangerous habit on innocent bystanders, children or other wise. Make this decision on your own without the government getting involved. -Emily Garrett within the next five years or so it will swiftly eclipse the tired little New West campus in terms of population and popularity. What this ultimately means for New West in the long- term could be very interesting to see. We could go the way of the former Kwantlen or Maple Ridge campuses and turn into independent colleges in our own right—though this would be a remarkably ironic fate for the campus that’s been the center of the Douglas universe for so long. Or we could simply face an even more striking role-reversal, and be reduced to second banana status in a new Coquitlam-dominated Douglas World Order. The administration would slowly migrate there, as would _ the Douglas Students Union, oe _ fine newspaper as well. I must give a great shout out to our very talented Corrections Dear reader, brand, it’s important that we never forget this. By the way, as long as we are talking about ignored campuses, did you know that Douglas has a Surrey campus, too? It’s true. They call it the “Douglas College Surrey Training Centre” and it’s right near the King George Skytrain station. It’s nowhere near as big or glamorous as Coquitlam or New West, and offers highly-specialized programs for smaller and more specifically-defined student demographics, including new immigrants and aspiring tradespeople. But the Surrey Training Centre is part of the Douglas commonwealth nonetheless, and as such, | am proud to announce that their little campus is now receiving regular issues of this. siness Manager Mark Fisher for it all together.
