On flag ladies

DARREN SUSIN
Davip LAM

here is a valid statement
T: be made on the

position of flag ladies in
our culture. They stand around
holding compressed pieces of
metal that say, “SLOW” or
“STOP.” For most, those who:
don't notice anything more
than who’s the new coach of
some overpaid hockey team, it
would seem that the flag lady
is a generic specimen hired
only because she took the four
hour course, passed with flying
colours, and-was on top of the
“flag ladies to call” list.

But to me, an avid spectator
of most useless things, I find a
sort of yellow revenge given to
women. By yellow, I mean a
quiet revenge. This is why they
wear orange, so they don't
appear quiet. Flag ladies bring
to the road a justified symbol
that cannot be matched by
paperboys or milkmen. They
may be small in size, and
quiet—only talking during
breaks—but flag ladies are the
ones who call the shots. A 5’5”
tall woman controls the road.
Any highway under construc-
tion will be superintended by a
passive mother who reads
romance novels. All zones

automatically conform to the
flag ladies’ zone of “SLOW.”
There is an underlying respect
for these helmeted women.

I give my respect to these
flag ladies. It is they who make
us ease up; it is them who
control our speed and it is a
flag lady, with the simple flick
of a wrist, that controls
whether grown men, married
or single, stop or go, in the
presence of a lady.
