Faculty Emeritus status awarded at February Board meeting Four retired faculty members received Faculty Emeritus status this year, bringing the number of Faculty Emeriti at Douglas College to 18. The new recipients are Roberta Bend, Faculty of Health Sciences; Raymond Brookes, Faculty of Commerce & Business Administration; Dr. Terry Farrell, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and Carol Howorth, Faculty of Child, Family & Community Studies. ‘These outstanding faculty members have been nominated by their peers for their excellence in teaching or related work, for their contribution to their discipline or area, for their contribution to the College, and for their desire to continue to participate in College activities. Theatre to be renamed for late avid arts patron On March 14 the Performing Arts ‘Theatre will be re-christened the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre. Muir was a relative of a current Douglas College staff member whose family has established an endowment fund in memory of this remarkable woman. The fund will be used to create an annual award for ‘Theatre, Stagecraft and Music students. During her life Muir was an avid patron of the arts and oversaw the production of numerous theatre productions in the communities where she lived and worked. She was also a strong believer in the value of education. She held a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan, a Bachelor of Literary Interpretation from Emerson College in Boston and a Masters Degree in Speech Pathology from Washington State University. In 1954 she graduated from United College in Winnipeg and became one of the first women ordained in the United Church of Canada. She taught speech therapy at Mount Royal College in Calgary before becoming an associate professor in education at the University of Calgary, where she worked until her retirement in 1978. Muir died last year at the age of 93. The naming ceremony takes place Friday, March 14 from 2:15- 3:15pm in the Theatre foyer. Everyone is invited to this special event. Douglas students support a hot ticket Everyone is invited to join students of the Hotel and Restaurant Management (HORM) Program at a dinner and dance fundraiser at Coquitlam’s Town Centre Fire Station on March 28. ‘The event is the Mayor’s Ball, honouring Coquitlam Mayor Maxine Wilson and raising money for the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund and HORM student support.
