Nal dae : COLLEGE CAGERS EXCEL AT TOURNEYS The fall sporting season is now into high gear at New Westminster's Douglas College, with men's and women’s volleyball and basketball tak- ing the spotlight. At the 3rd Annual Royal Classic Men's Basketball Tournament held October 24-25, Douglas College put together three straight victories, including a key win over arch-nemesis Vancouver Police in the championship game. Douglas opened the lournament with a decisive 79-64 win over the Victoria Junior Varsity team and in the semi- finals, knocked off Medicine Hat Rattlers 77-62. The gold medal game against the Police turned out to be a re-match of least season's championship game with only one difference. This year, Douglas won! Behind the fine play of tournament MVP Randy Stevens and first team all- stars Bill Matthews and Rick Mesich, College clubbed the Police 85-66. Trinity Western University grabbed third place after beating Fraser Valley College in the bronze medal game. Other all-stars included Car! Mattei of Trinity, Gil Puder of Police and Richard Cohee of Medicine Hat. The Douglas College Women's Basketball team also enjoyed great success in tournament play as they hit the road for a tourney in Grande Prairie, fashioning — three straight wins to take first place. Douglas opened with a 78-59 win over NAIT, followed with an 83-50 win over Cariboo and then bumped off host Grande Prairie 84-50 in the champi- _ onship game. Mirjana Juric and Joanne Taylor of the hometown Royals were selected all- stars while Ethel Atte won the ' Ms. Basketball Award’ as the most inspira- tional athlete. In volleyball play, the men’s team con- tinued to rack up impressive numbers, while the ladies continued their early season struggle. The men entered the annual Cariboo College tourney and kept their un- defeated record intact, taking first place overall with three straight wins. in their first match, Douglas College topped host Cariboo 15-1 | and 15-8, followed that with 15-1, 10-15 and 15- 6 scores against Royal Roads Military College in the semi's. QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT The Canada Winter Games qualifying tournament for men’s and women's basketball is being held at Douglas College on November 13,14 and 15. The winners of this competition will represent B.C. at the Canada Winter Games in Nova Scotia next February. Event organizer, Betty Lou Hayes says that becauase this is a round robin competition the best games could come at any time during the tourna- ment. The teams entered are Douglas College, Capilano, VCC, and Richmond. Game times are 2:00 P.M., 4-00 P.M., 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. each day. Admission is $2 per day.
