CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION CREDITS Originator Al A. Atkinson Date September 27, 1985 New x Revision Education X Administration _x 1. Rationale Co-operative Education combines formal classroom learning and applied work experience. In any work term, students, in addition to gaining valuable work experience, will be responsible for mastering specific educational objectives which have been determined and evaluated by the appropriate faculty. The achievement of these learning objectives by students constitutes a bona fide educational experience, and, as such, merits the awarding of credits. 2. Policy Statement Douglas College will award credits for the successful completion of the work term(s) in any program or discipline which provides a cO-operative education option for students. . 3. College Philosophy Statement By awarding credit for the work term the college will be giving formal recognition to an educational experience which is designed to assist students in: a) improving their social and economic status (potential employment after graduation) b) acquiring confidence and independence as workers and participating members of society c) determining, testing or modifying specific career goals In valuing and crediting work experiences the college will be working with other institutions, agencies and businesses to coordinate its offerings with the realities of changing needs in the workplace. This coordination will result in increased communication between the college and the potential employers of its graduates, and, as a result, curricula will be revised and updated in response to changing needs in the community. Awarding credit for the work term will insure that: a) appropriate educational objectives are determined and incorporated as part of the work experience b) classroom-based knowledge and skills are applied and evaluated in the work setting by students and faculty c) educational accreditation of the work term by the college will be recognized by employers and other educational institutions.
