INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / January 7, 1992 Wellness under review Julie Roper wants to know what we think of health and wellness at our workplace. Roper, a Therapeutic Recreation Instructor, is on a leave of absence to examine health and wellness as they apply to post-secon- dary programs and services. (Wellness describes choices and options in an en- . vironment which make it healthier and safer.) Part of her re- search is addressing needs and concerns at Douglas College. She is urging all employees to respond to a one- page Wellness Interest Survey which will be distributed in January pay en- velopes. She says the results will be important for identifying employees’ concerns about wellness in their work environment. "The College needs to know that people are interested and that there are benefits to the institution such as improved morale. In fact, there is a lot of research that shows heal- thier people are more motivated and more productive," says Roper. "We spend so much time at work, with so little left over, that the more we can do at work to improve our health, the better." Roper has also formed a Health Promotion and Wellness Steering Committee to examine the issue at Douglas College*Committee members include students, staff, faculty, mid-managers and senior administrators.
